Err, they call it FlashPlay, so of course it's flash memory based. This is not DFD streaming.
Just saw this on another forum. The consensus is it IS a form of streaming off conventional flash ROM to RAM if that makes sense.
So it appears were both "Sorta right".

This is good news for Kurzweil.
They finally are releasing a new keyboard product that has (1) a graphics touchscreen and (2) has a large amount of sample ROM data.
This might be a good choice for someone looking for a stage piano.

Forte doesn't have a touchscreen, it's just a regular color LCD.

I'm interested in it.
What old technology is in Kronos ( I'll assume you don't mean OASYS)?
And, this is not a workstation, its pianos and vintage keys only. In that regard it's spec is very impressive indeed. Looks hideous to me though, I dislike keyboards with all sorts of angle-y bit just for the sake of it.

Of course I meant Oasys.
I just meant to point out that just because something is a partial rehash that doesn't invalidate its quality.

I'll compare it to an apple if I want to. It's all about intended purpose.

I am curious for the Forte. I have owned the Pc3x before the Kronos and was very happy with it. I did some demo testing for Kurzweil as well. Customer support was amazing.
As a ROMpler it sounded amazing. Yes the Piano sounds dated but was very playable in a sense that it was somehow alive or organic. There are better sounding alternatives out there, but I doubt they play better. And those Orchestral sounds are so good. The keybed was fantastic is well. I think the biggest drawback is the GUI and seeing the bigger screen on the Forte they have addressed this and seem to be changing that for future products as well.

So...if it looks like a stage Piano, why would you even try comparing it to
Kronos? Its funny how people out there try to compare every entry or
whatever level synth to Kronos.

Someone just sent me this thread, thought I'd sign up, say hi and chime in.
I worked for Kurz full time for many years, after leaving in 2103 I worked on the Forte as a part time contractor (I did the EPs and Clavs).
Personally I don't see the Forte and Kronos as directly competing with one another. Ideally I'd love to have both in my rig. One is a fine stage piano/gig-machine, one is a killer full-featured workstation.
What the Kronos and Forte do have in common - they both introduced fairly major advances, advances that will spur ALL keyboard manufacturers to step up their game.
Anyone with Kurz/Forte related questions can feel free to shoot me an email anytime. Always happy to assist and rap about keyboards.

thanks for chiming in Dave.
Sometimes these brand centered forums are not quite agnostic with other brands and a bit of snarking occurs.
I have an Artis it is a stage PIANO. I have a MOXF, a Jupiter 80, and an FA06, each has its use for me
I have a Kronos X 73 on the way, I will use it as a piano among other things.
I bought each for their own specific purposes that suit MY needs

OP asks ... "New Kurzweil Forte will be a Kronos challenger"?
Quite simply, No.

It looks absolutely horrendous! Among the ugliest keyboards I've ver seen.

I think that's way too harsh, and not even halfways true (there are heaps of naff looking keyboards out there, Forte is quite classy looking really). At least some reasoning would make sense, instead of flat out attacking without any merits, just because.
In the end, personal taste is just like an asshole. We all have one. That doesn't mean you have to be one.
