yam to pa styles

Post by barry murphy »

I'm playing around learning to convert yammie styles to korg and I wonder if someone can help.
Should I delete the sysx lines before I convert.
Should I delete all the control parts in the tracks?
The v1cv1 always seems to have a extra measure or two. It's not a prob to fix but why does it do that?
I use MB's midi player to convert the style to midi.
Are there other programs that do this?( not emc or whatever it's called)

Hi Barry

Removing Yam SYSEX is a good idea.
CC's are often useful to leave (volume/panning etc...) but some may cause some confusion - you really need to go through them and decide.

Sorry, but don't understand - how are you building the PA3X style?

Cheers

yam to pa styles

Yes.
Doing a conversion. I believe it's possible to make any Yamaha style into a korg(pa3x) style.
I'm changing the markers and editing some notes finally on the korg.
They actually copy very well with simple styles. Not so easy with minor keys.
Be glad of any other advice you can send my way.

Hi Barry,
you don't really need a program to convert yam styles to mid.
It's as simple as changing the styles extension to .mid.

Load the .mid into your pc sequencer.

You'll see every single track used in the psr style.

9 to 16 are normally the major tracks.
sysex is usually on track 1.

2 to 8 IF USED , are normally minor tracks.

The drum and percussion tracks are always shared between major and minor parts.

The earlier yammie styles were fairly simple to do, the newer ones with the mega voices can be a bit of a nightmare, you have to remove those higher notes used as they create strange squeaks in a korg style. They normally appear in a track of their own.

Basically for the older styles I used to load in the .mid file.
Swap channels 9 & 11 around( bass & percussion to suit korg)
Delete the sysex track.
Check to see if there were any genuine minor tracks for variations and fills.
Rare in earlier styles. If none, I would then do a copy of the main 2 intro's and endings and attach them to the end of the .mid file.

I would delete the minor tracks( 2 to 8 ) from the original version intro ending. delete the major tracks from the copied version and change the midi channels from 2 to 8 to correspond to the major tracks.

THen I would go thru and change the markers.

The rest of my editing I normally did in the korg itself.

Fortunately nowadays we have the XG drum maps which help a lot.
Before that I used to convert my drums manually.

Hopes this helps a bit
