William- you still have not said whether or not you tried danatkorg's suggestion.

Yes, I did read through the operations guide a danatakorg suggested.

the Operations guide has step by step procedures. Sometimes doing them is better than just reading them?

I finally have it working!!! .. and I have now tried more than one take to make sure. Apparently the operating system (v 2.05) had a glitch in it.. or a glitch had developed(?). Anyway I just loaded the newest OS version 2.1 and it is NOW RECORDING AUDIO! just as advertised. I am greatly relieved that I don't have to send it away for warranty work.
