XLR to 1/4 cable with Mic to kp3+ sounds like a bad ground

There's probably just some simple principal of cables that I'm not aware of but I'm confused because when I use this cable

With a MIC to the KP3+ it's really quiet and if I touch the XLR casing at all on the cable it makes a really loud buzzing sound like a bad ground... This is the second one of these cables I've tried to use and same thing both times..
BUT if I use a cheap crappy XLR to XLR cable and then stick one of these on the end of it

It sounds fine.... It sticks out from the device like it took too much Viagra but it's loud and there's no buzz...
The XLR to 1/4 is high quality Mogami GOLD so it seems weird that two different versions of that cable would have the exact same behavior... So I feel like I'm just not understanding something simple about why an XLR to 1/4 cable won't work with this device...
I ran the Mogami Gold cable from the MIC to a mixing board and it sounded fine
