Noob ? Live Setup

Post by Arizona Sage »

Hi everyone. I'm primarily a guitarist who dabbles in keys. I recently picked up a Kronos X88 and want to integrate this into my live show with my band so I'll be doing double duty with guitar and keys. At home I'm using a pair of M Audio powered monitors but have no clue how I should run the keyboard on stage. Should I use the powered monitors as just that?...stage monitors. Can I still feed a 2 channel stereo signal to the house PA? Any suggestions and examples of how any of you run yours on stage would be most appreciated.

I doubt your monitors would work well as a PA. If they're studio monitors, they are designed for nearfield (3-10ft) listening. I'm currently using a single QSC K10 PA speaker as a monitor, but if the stage volume is low enough, you might be able to use your M-Audios as onstage monitors. One disadvantage though is that your speakers won't have house outputs like the K10, so you're either going to have to either remap all your sounds so that they also send audio out a pair of the aux outputs, or you are going to need a small mixer of some sort to split your audio signal. I use a simple 1u Behringer line mixer - I use the effects send to send an independent signal from each of my boards (I use 2) to the K10, and use the main outputs to go to FOH. This allows me to independently adjust the volume of my monitor onstage (from the mixer) without affecting the signal that goes to the sound guy at FOH.

Guess I need to invest in a small mixer. I also have a pair of Yamaha passive wedge monitors and a Power Amp that I could use to power them

The only other option is to just run direct to the board (L/R) and have the keyboard come back through the monitor mix? Trying to keep things manageable.

That's definitely an option for lower volume places.. I don't think I personally could trust that myself with some of the places I play, though. Half the time I end up having to share a monitor with the bass player

Just curious if I can assign the individual sends to double the Main L/R send so I can feed my powered monitors with them while still feeding the main audio L/R to the board? That would fix it for me I think. Is this doable?

From the Kronos Operations guide:

(INDIVIDUAL) 1…4
These 4 additional audio outputs let you isolate
sounds, audio inputs, or audio tracks for recording or
complex live sound setups.
These can be used as stereo or mono outputs, in any
combination. You can also use the Global Audio page
LR Bus Indiv. Assign parameter to map the main
stereo outputs to any of these output pairs, if you like.
Note that the individual outputs are not affected by the
MAIN VOLUME knob.

If your power amp has a pair of line outputs that work independently from the amp outputs that would work as well. In a pinch, I've used the headphone output of the K, but it's not good for the amp and the volume is tied to the main L/R.
