usb device not recognized

Post by charles.monteiro »

just got a micro x, unfortunately can't use it via usb. Windows won't even recognize it i.e. I get a message "usb device not recognized" that it has apparently malfunctioned etc.

I need help desperately :) I bought the micro x because I could load the editor as a VST, but loading the patches via straight midi takes a year. Its not viable that way.

thanks

You need to download the Korg USB-Midi driver and install it.

thanks , but I did that. At least I think I did, whatever it installed was more like a tool to install the usb driver or configure.

I first installed the CD that came with the micro x, after that didn't work I went here:

http://www.korg.com/service/downloadinfo.asp?DID=1229

and got V 1.11

maybe the registry got messed up but have no clue what to do. Running the app that gets installed assumes that when I hook up the micro x to the pc that windows will find it , but rather windows cannot recognize the device. I gather it is meant to be recognized as an "usb audio device" which later gets configured for micro x.

Run the "Configure KORG USB-MIDI Driver" application.

If the driver is loaded, that application will show a File version for it, such as "User mode driver: 1.11.XX.XX".

Then plug in the keyboard via USB. You should see the "Device List..." button go from disabled to enabled. If the button doesn't change, try a different USB port or cable.

Try that and report what you see.

I did do that but nothing happened i.e. nothing at , it was as if it ignored it but I tried several times. I'm going to un-install and re-install.

I'll report back soon.

I uninstalled and installed but without success.

"Configure KORG USB-MIDI Driver" application. " does nothing. Once I turn on the micro x it loads as an "unknown device". I guess I'll start unplugging my usb devices and trying although non are irrelevant.

does this driver require Win XP service pack 3 ?

I manually via "add hardware" added micro x and microKontrol but although installed they can't open . They both show Code 10.

I want to manually add a "usb audio device" but can't find its .inf file

What do you mean by ""Configure KORG USB-MIDI Driver" application " does nothing? When you run the application you should see a window with the caption "KORG USB-MIDI Driver" with an OK and Cancel buttons at the bottom. If you don't see a window displayed, then you've got a problem with your operating system, since you should at least get some error message if the program doesn't load.

Open up the "Installation Manual" under the "KORG USB-MIDI driver tools" folder. Do you see the manual contents?

Run the "Uninstall KORG USB-MIDI Device" application. What do you see? How many midi devices are shown? There may be old midi drivers that you need to remove. If so, click on the Option... button and uncheck the "Delete Korg MIDI Device only" checkbox and hit the OK button. Then click the check box for the old MIDI drivers to remove them" with the Next> button. Then run the "Install KORG USB-MIDI Device" application.

I uninstalled via Windows "add/remove programs" feature. Nothing was happening when I used the shortcut created for the program group. However, I discovered that if I directly engaged the exe i.e. cplrun.exe I do see what you mention. I have checked the registry for midi entries , I only have 3 which is below the supposed magic number of 10.

I do see the html page with the instructions for installing the usb midi driver.

I'll runt the Korg uninstaler instead of using Window's.

Running "intall Korg driver" has been failing because it states that it cannot see the device.

I'll take screenshots and report back.

okay, when I connect the micro x to my PC I get this:

Image

What this doesn't show you is that the Found new hardwae bubble help popped up and that soon aftewards another bubble help popped stating that a usb device has malfunctioned and that it is "unknown" to Windows.

BTW, I have tried different usb slots. This particular one is directly connected to the back of my PC.

If I run the Korg uninstaller this is what it shows:

Image

Here's the rest of it:

Image

As you can see I'm clear of any Korg midi device entries and I seem to have plenty slots left. It also shows a number of previously successful usb midi driver installs.

Here is what the Device Manager shows for my usb devices:

Image

Here is what you will see in my Sound Audio Panel:

As you will have noticed I do have a successful USB Audio Device installation, namely for my Trigger Finger , see this:

Running the " Configure Korg USB ...." application results in this:

Image

Note that the micro x is connected to the PC via usb i.e. physically connected, obviously Windows classifies the micro x as an "unknown device".

This is probably confirmed by the fact that if I run the ez setup application. I get the following:

Image

Everything seems to boil down to the fact that Windows never recognized the micro x and thus did not hook it up with the generic driver i.e. for usb audio devices. I have tried 3 different usb slots although diagnostics show that I have plenty of usb midi slots. The only thing I have not tried is using a different cable. It happens that I just purchased from Staples a gold plated terminated 16 ft USB 2.0 cable so I'm guessing that its good.

Can you think of any other diagnostics I could run?

thanks for your help.

Are you using a powered USB hub (i.e. does it have a power adapter plugged into it)?

at first I was but my last attempts were with the micro x connected to usb jacks right on the PC. However, there is a powered usb hub connected to the PC as well , if that makes a difference.

I think this is about some sort of corrupted issue with the registry with regards to usb devices. On my basically virgin notebook, I was able to have Windows recognize the mciro x , does me little good because I need this on my main DAW. The other bummer is that I was contemplating purchasing a PadKontrol because of its tight integration with the micro x. I'm unsure if that is going to work i.e. for the same reasons the micro x is suffering from.

You need to simplify your USB setup to diagnose and fix this problem. Your system shows 9 Hubs!!!! Remove all other USB devices and hubs. Use the Delete utility to remove all other third party USB drivers that it allows, you can add them back later.

See all those unused midi (greyed out) between midi0 and midi9, that indicates you've probably installed a lot of prior midi drivers that are no longer working. Those drivers are located in the Windows Registry. You can use the Delete utility to remove the functioning midi drivers, but not corrupted ones. You may need to clean up the midi registry manually using regedit. You probably can google how to do this.

there's only one 7 port hub, if there are other hubs they are on the motherboard as well as a PCI USB card. I assume you mean the Korg "delete" utility. I'll try the manual registry editing. I have for now delegated the micro x editor to my notebook. I'll see if I have any issues when I add the padKontrol.
