The EXB-M256 is STILL at £120. Is that the Cheapest?

Post by NightOrchid »

Hi

Im wanting to expand the memory of my M3 for sampling and loading up all EXB sounds.

Ive looked on the web, but the cheapest EXB-M256 is £120, even on eBay. I realise that priority ram can help with compatibility issues, but Why on earth are KORG still charging that amount for a tiny 256MB of memory after 18 months of the M3 on the market.

Has anyone found a M256 board any cheaper than £120 in UK or is there any other memory that works.. the M256 looks like Laptop ram.

Cheers
Night

Can't help you with respect to possible UK deals, but I can answer about whether you can use laptop memory. You can't.

The memory issue was discussed in a previous thread. Here's the conclusion:

If you then compare the connection configurations this is where you will find the differences. Many of the power connections are the same but the similarities end there. pin56 for example is VSS on a SODIMM but on the Korg part is address line 19 (A19). Pin 35 on the SODIMM is VSS and on Korg is chip select CS3. Also it appears that the address lines and data lines do not relate at all. So I'm afraid it seems that Korg have used an easily available footprint and put their own electronics on the pcb.
I would strongly suggest you heed the warning label on the bottom panel and only use the Korg EXB-M256.
So, there you go. Korg used a standard SODIMM PCB for the EXB-M256, but the circuitry is custom. Only use non-Korg memory if you're comfortable with the possibility of destroying your M3 and voiding your warranty.

In fact, M256 is not a cheap thing... i found it about SGD$265 at City Music Singapore. But i surprised that i found a great price at Korg's Online Shop. It's only $99!!!! http://www.korgusa.com/korgusa/Itemdesc.asp?ic=EXBM256
