The forums will only ever be of average quality, with the few really good posts and discussions obscured by the inane topics and duplications, as long as those who are knowledgeable are content to spoonfeed anyone who has the brain cells to register. Some moderation, in the form of mods locking threads identified as duplicates and moving topics to the right forum (how people post questions nearly daily for one keyboard in another keyboard's forum is beyond me) would help too.
And yes, I know Sharp is really busy and Daz left recently, and this isn't intended to be a reflection on them.
But the main problem is the regulars make it ok for someone to come in, ask a stupid question, and get answers. I define a stupid question here as one that shouldn't be asked because the answer is readily available and the more recent person is only asking because they're lazy. I've even had times where I replied to a topic suggesting that since the answer's been discussed more than once, they should search for it and someone else has come along and answered the question anyway - not just linked them to previous topics (which is still spoonfeeding, IMO), but a full-blown answer, basically retyping what was already available.
I know this is hoping for too much, but I'd love to see newcomers to any technical forum be requested to read this when they register, and have a culture promoted among forum regulars that gently prevents people from getting away with laziness.

And the funniest of all is (has happened many times) the same question
is asked in 2 topics, one right on top of the other...imagine that.

Heaven forbid people could actually READ the manual first.kanthos wrote: the main problem is the regulars make it ok for someone to come in, ask a stupid question, and get answers. If you're brand new to workstations or synths, the manual may not make much sense, so I understand that. It's when someone clearly hasn't checked something obvious, like asking how to do a pitch bend without looking for pitch bend, or, worse, when they find out that they need to use combi mode to do splits and layers and then ask for step by step instructions in great detail on how to do that.

This is common problem with all message boards. Good content management practices are required to overcome this problem. Doing this manually is very hard.
There are too many variables involved in how one word the subject line. Not everyone is good at making the topic specific or even recognizing the impact of a vague topic. Context and experience of the topic starter has a lot effect on how he/she words it. If I have been working on MIDI problem for past three hours on M3, my mind has a context of MIDI and M3. If I go to a general workstation message board and start a topic.... "Having problem with my keyboard for three hours..." It's pretty clear to ME what I am talking about.... but the readers will scratch their head.. which keyboard, what problem.. etc. If I post "need help with M3 MIDI setup to USB keyboard on Windows laptop"... readers will know the topic and will not need to look in if they can't help.
Automatic topic wording can help. If the system can provide a wizard style interface to build a topic line, that will be great. I have seen some systems where the system provides a search result before starting a new topic. The system searches words in my topic and shows be posts with those words that are already there. If this message board can be set up like that, it can reduce number of new duplicate topics.

Hi Guys.
To a point a pin has been stuck in the development of the forum for a while due to our CPU load on the server and our massive bandwidth usage. KORG Forums needs a dedicated server, not a shared server, so we have had to do things to keep resources down while plans and technical issues were sorted out.
A dedicated server is pretty expensive and since this is a non-profit website, well.... money doesn’t grow on trees and so a lot of discussions have had to take place backstage here.
Lots of progress has been made here on all this and soon we will be moving to our own server. When that happens development will return to full steam ahead again, and I would hope that we will also see the return of 250,000 + archived posts. This is very important information that once is back online, all newbies will be strongly advised to use the search engine again.
KORG Forums was always seen as a very technical website and we need to go back to being that again. The system worked in the past and there is no reason why it won't work again in the future.
In short the plan is.... Get the server issues solved, return all the archived posts, advise newbies to use the search engine again... and then start developing the forums full steam ahead. The download section is also going to change big time.
So hang in there guys. I've not dropped the ball at all here.
This is also your forum guys, so please feel free to suggest things you would like to see improved bearing in mind what I've just said above and what I've already got planned.
There's also nothing stopping you guys for starting some advanced and heavy technical threads either you know
Kind Regards
Sharp.
