STR-1 engine power: non-typical use of the engine

Post by aether »

Most videos focus on STR-1 as a plucked string engine. Of course, it is one.
But the crazy possibilities of sound design really show off when we approach the STR-1 for sounds that are NOT plucked string type.
A few examples and tutorial on how one can go nuts with STR-1 way , WAY beyond plucked instrument sounds:

Thanks for the video, I really appreciate your shedding some light on this engine.

Thanks for this. I enjoyed the video. I think STR-1 probably has the least amount of videos of all the synth engines in the Kronos, so it's nice to have another addition.

Indeed, it is very underrated somehow, maybe because it is seen as just some specialised engine for just plucked string sounds - not sure, but like you say, it has very very few videos and all, except the Qui Robinez soundset one , show only the plinky-plonky plucked side of it :)

Will you "share" some new STR-1 sound with us? :?:
I mean can you post a PCG file with new, self made, sounds?

I am planning to put together a bank and have some free bits, just couldn't predict or commit to a specific time - I hope quite soon.

I think your unusual programming is very interesting and we can learn a lot about the STR-1 engine from your patches.
You are underrating your work!

I think what you have done in these videos is very educational. Just your demonstration on the excitation filter section alone has unveiled a good deal of the mystery that is the STR-1.

Your pads open up another digital realm that is different from the MOD7 engine pads.

Thank you, quite flattered I mean it is my first ever "tutorial" (whatever it can be called) video so I had huge reservations myself and imagined everybody falls asleep :)

One thing some commented on YT quite rightly is that the audio from Kronos and the voice are very different so it can be quite annoying and makes one jump. So will try a better job at that in future :)

That was me. I try to do a test run these days to check how loud the Kronos is compared to my voice. Even then getting the levels right can be tricky, especially when going through so many sound examples like you were.
Have you tried using the Kronos Editor? Screen recording the editor is a lot cleaner than recording the Kronos screen IMO.
That said, it IS a good video with great talking points. I don't want my criticism to dissuade you from making more content. STR-1 is long overdue for some nice tutorials.
