I cannot figure out how to select a particular GM drum kit in sequencer mode. The VNL manual lists an orchestra drum kit called INT07 (Orchestra) under GM drums (page 180). The OG manual says that pressing the Int-G bank button successively toggles from one GM bank to another (page 4). But when I do this I never see one that contains INT07. What am I doing wrong? _________________ UCG Musician |

I think you have to continue pressing from GM, g(0 .. or 1?), g(2) until you reach g(d) ... the d stands for drums so I think you are looking for program g(d)007. _________________

I did that but it's just not there. That's why I posted. Maybe some folks can confirm that they do (or do not) have this GM drum INT07 bank under GM(d). Does the documentation reference a bank that is not on all instruments? _________________ UCG Musician |

I've got in g(d) 049, that's the ORCHESTRA kit.
I got there after pressing the I-G key a couple of times _________________ Fernando

from memory: there is a separate GM tab if i recall correctly. But there is a better way to do it:
- press the category button from that timbre instead of the program select button
- Now you see the category Drums, there are all the drumsets that are available in your system INCLUDING the GM drumsets |

Go to Program mode. Keep pushing the I-G button until you see g(d) as the bank. Touch the arrow next to "Standard Kit" and select the bank you want.

I know there are multiple orchestra drum kits in a series in that bank but none of them are the one I'm looking for. The Voice Name List Manual describes one called "INT07" or "GM7" (depending on which version of the manual you're looking at). Under the "GM Drum Kit" section, there are 8 kits listed -- Standard, Room, Power, Electronic, Analog, Jazz, Brush, Orchestra and SFX. I am trying to access the Orchestra drum kit in sequencer mode by driving the Kronos by computer using Sonar. I do not understand what I'm doing wrong. Can these particular drum kits not be accessed in sequencer mode? _________________ UCG Musician |

Yes, they can be accessed.
You could try this :
Insert the following sysex code at the beginning of a MIDI track in your sequencer :
F0, 42, 30, 68, 4E, 04, F7
This will put the Kronos in sequencer mode. Of course, you don't have to do this. You can just click the Seq button on your Kronos. Personally, I like to select everything from my DAW so I don't have to be at the machine.
Then, you need to insert at the beginning of the drum track the codes allowing you to specify which bank and preset you want to use for that particular track. If you read the manual, the GM drum kits are accessed using 120/00 or 62/00. This info is given pages 755/756 of the Parameter Guide, E4 edition.
At the beginning of the drum track, input :
Control 0 = 120 (or 62)
Control 32 = 0
Program change = 1
That program change number 1 will give you the standard GM Drum Kit. To select the Orchestral Kit, you need to change the Program Change value to that selecting the Orchestral Kit. I'm not sure which value it is, maybe 49, I'm yet to try. But it's a simple matter for you to try the value from 1 going up and see the resulting change on your Kronos. At some point, you will have found the correct Program Change value required to select the Orchestral bank.
Once you're done, perhaps you could report which Program Change value selects which GM drum kit, which will be useful to know.
Good luck. |

Tonight, I had a look at this for you and tried it for myself.
After entering controller 0 and 32 values, the Program Change values you need are :
1 - GM Kit
9 - Room Kit
17 - Power Kit
25 - Electronic Kit
26 - Analog Kit
33 - Jazz Kit
41 - Brush Kit
49 - Orchestra Kit
57 - SFX Kit
With the Kronos, they have carried on the same GM drum Kit implementation as first released with the X3. So 49 was a good guess for the Orchestral Kit. |

I made some headway. Your suggestions did allow me to set the Kronos to sequencer mode & select the "correct" drum kit from Sonar. I guess I should be happy with that!
However, I was trying to find a drum kit with timpani & typical orchestral percussion like crash cymbal & snare drum roll. I do not know why the GM Orchestra drum kit is done this way but it pitches the timpani an octave too low. I developed another convoluted work-around by using the pitch bend wheel to raise the tone an octave. Now when the MIDI notes are played on the Kronos, they are at the right pitch.
I am posting another thread because I need to know how to access decent (orchestral-sounding) crash cymbals. I found a bank of them in Global mode. I do not know if they are accessible in Sequencer mode. _________________ UCG Musician |

I would separate the tympani and other percussion sounds, on two separate tracks in Sequence mode. This would allow you to us one of the dedicated Tympani programs, which has the tymp spread over several octaves so you can choose the pitches you need.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough tracks for that in this particular sequence. I'm using only track 10 for percussion. It's a good solution otherwise. Thanks. _________________ UCG Musician |

I'm not familiar with Sonar but can't you just use another channel? I often use 10 and 11. Anything can be assigned anywhere. How many channels does your system allow you to use? Another way might be to use the Kronos sequencer as well. It will give you another 16 tracks. _________________ If music is the food of love, play on and play loud!

Sonar is driving all 16 channels. There's piano, chorus, flutes, oboes, english horn, bassoons, clarinets, horns, trumpets, trombones, tuba, percussion, violin, viola, cello bass & harp. I've already combined as much as I can. The Kronos can only play 16 channels anyway. _________________ UCG Musician |
