RT knob edit underlying parameter values not saving - help

Post by niacin »

I am unable to save parameter adjustments made using the RT knobs. I understand they return to their center position value 64 after saving, but the edited underlying parameter values should be saved, and they’re not.

So I select program 000: Berlin Grand SW2 U.C.; select control surface RT and edit the EG release from 64 to 78; select TONE ADJUST and edit release time +11; EXi1 Lid Position edit to 11; Write Program to I-A000.
The saved programme has the release time and lid position edits saved. The EG release knob resets to 64 as the manual says on p.44:

“The Real-Time Knobs are great for modulating sounds in performance, or for recording. If you like, you can also save the edited version of the sound, using the normal Write Program command. Internally, a single knob usually affects several different parameters. When you write a Program, the edits are saved into the individual parameters, and not to the knob itself. After writing the Program, you’ll notice that the knobs have returned to their center positions-since the old ‘edited’ values are now the new ‘saved’ values”.

Except that my old ‘edited’ values have not been saved. i.e. yes the knob returns to value 64 as stated, but the ‘edited’ values – created by adjusting the EG release knob to 78 – are not saved, and the sound is saved with the original, unedited EG release parameter values.

I need to save the RT knob edits – aware that the knob itself returns to center – or find another way of editing and then saving the EG release parameter values.

Thanks in advance.

EG release and Release Time are the same thing I think, perhaps the Tone Adjust value is overriding the RT knob during saving?

Try saving after each step...

"select control surface RT and edit the EG release from 64 to 78"

Write.

Then,

"select TONE ADJUST and edit release time +11"

Write again.

Etc. HTH

I went through this a while ago. Trying to save the knob 4 setting for EG release and not having it save.
Also i recall it being an issue in SGX engine. Can't remember if i tried it in EXi engines to find it only happens in SGX, but for sure it happened to me in SGX engine.
That was before i had a better sense of tone adjust page and controllers setup in the program.
EG release is Knob 4. When you look at the controller setup tab in program, you will see it allows you to assign knob 5,6,7 and 8 only, along with SW 1 and 2.
Knobs 1-4 are preset/fixed controls always set to what they are labelled as. The only exception is Tone adjust page where you get to assign the function of every knob 1 through to 8 as well as all 9 sliders and 16 switches.
Knob 1-4 are a different category of knobs and behave in a set way, compared to the assignability of everything else. You have to go to tone adjust page to get knobs 1-4 or their functions to work for you differently.

You may have the knob 4 function of EG release also set by default to a slider or switch on the tone adjust page, and of course you have the option to set the eg release function to any knobs in tone adjust page if you want. Tone adjust page even gives you a read out at top screen of the details of the tone adjust control's status which includes "stored value". Just select a control and the read out at top screen will reference that control's status.

So set up the EG release in tone adjust page and then set the value there, save it as well as reference the stored value from there.

Doing it from RT knob 4 preset comes with issues in SGX, I am not so clear what exactly causes the issue but it could be conflict with where the same function is set in tone adjust to a slider or switch versus preset knob 4, and kronos defaults to the tone adjust page for saving assigned parameter edits. It could be particular to SGX piano engine. ?
If i had Kronos with me now, i would try going to tone adjust and clearing out any controls set with the knob 4 preset function of eg release. That way only knob 4 has that function. Then try saving it as set from knob 4. That would confirm if issue is caused by conflict with the same function being setup to a different control like slider or switches in tone adjust where kronos defaults to for settings to be saved.
If that makes no difference, then adjust it from tone adjust as assigned to the control of your choice and then save it and reference the "stored value" status at top screen to see what happened.

Honestly, i cannot recall how i resolved the issue when i had it. Not even sure if i simply settled on the EG release not being possible to save in SGX. The best of my memory recalls a comment on the forum saying it has to be done in tone adjust. That was back when i had little grasp on all that stuff. Definitley go to tone adjust.

Here is what parameter guide Page 30 says about tone adjust edit saves.
Peculiarities between types pf parameters that affect how they are saved, as well as the separation between the saved value and the function it adjusts.
This is what i suspect is going on with RT knob 4, where 1-4 are a different category of knobs and stick to their individual preset function when outside of tone adjust page where kronos may be defaulting to for what edits to save.
So the EG release save issues may be from the exclusivity of knob 1-4 outside of tone adjust and/or a conflict with where eg release function is set to a different control in tone adjust page, . Thus, look to tone adjust if a solution is anywhere to be found.

Excerpt parameter guide page 30.
~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~
"Saving Tone Adjust Edits
Tone Adjust edits are saved in two different ways, depending on whether the parameter is Relative or Absolute. (For more information, see “Absolute, Relative, and Meta parameters,” below.)
Edits to Relative parameters affect the sound immediately, but don’t change the underlying Program parameter settings until the Program is saved. When the Program is saved, the KRONOS calculates the combined effects of Tone Adjust and dedicated CC modulation (from the Real Time Knobs, for instance), and saves the results into the Program parameters directly. At that point, all of the Relative parameters are reset to 0.
Edits to Absolute parameters are immediately reflected in the corresponding on-screen parameters, and vice-versa.
Tone Adjust and MIDI SysEx
The Tone Adjust sliders, knobs, and switches all send and receive MIDI System Exclusive messages. You can use this to record and play back Tone Adjust edits with a sequencer, including the built-in sequencer.
NOTE: The SysEx messages are tied to the physical controls, and not to the functions to which they are assigned. For instance, let’s say that slider 1 is assigned to control Filter Resonance, and move slider 1 while recording into a sequencer. The sequencer will record that slider 1 has moved, and not that Filter Resonance has changed. If you later change slider 1 to control LFO1 Speed, playing back the sequence will affect the LFO, and not Filter Resonance. "
