PA-500 low output sound

Post by Manchoa »

Hi !

I just got my PA-500. I have several different k-boards and synths from Roland, Ketron; Solton, Yamaha ect, i just wanted to have also a Korg sound in my setup.
The problem is - the output sound of PA-500 is very low.
What I mean with low or quiet sound is, that when I connect the Korg PA-500 to my equipment and set the inputs to level, where all my other synths peak from -1dB to 0dB (or whatever audio equipmnet with Line OUT), Korg PA-500 gives only -11dB when I play the styles or songs !!!
Listen and compare (I didn´t change anything, just took wires from one synth and put to another). First one is my Roland Fantom X, then Solton and then PA-500 :

It´s neary 20-25% quiter waht means that I have to turn up the input sensitivity, but that mean more hiss and noize !

Sounds unusual to me. Especially since it is in factory state. have you changed any of the settings in the keyboard?

What equipment do you use?

Hi !

No, I have not changed anything in setting, exept adding a little EQ in output (+2 in low freq and +1.5 in high).

I have installed my PS-500 both to my Home setup ( Samick SX8s mixer, Edirol FA-66 saoundcard) and our profi live setup (Via our profi Mackie mixer, HK audio sepakers, compressor ect).

I´m a k-board player (a live reformer) in a jazz fusion band for 18 years and its a first k-board for me, that does not give full line senistivity output !

This is strange.

1. Go to GLOBAL EDIT MODE: check the master EQ (audio setup) f.e. midi filter. Check that is is enabled.

2. Can you try if there is a difference between using jacks for L+R and only using L/MONO ?

3. Try to INPUT some audio, like a CD player or something else (microphone). How is that output ? Is the OUTPUT equally low ?

4. Do you do hear all the FX effects ? (you can also send a "dry" signal to the output, without FX)

5. Also look in MIXER/TUNING to check the levels of the different tracks (grouped style tracks and keyboard tracks). Are they low ? Increase them. They should be higher than 80 normally I think.

Please post the answers here and maybe someone knows the answer. I am not to good at this technical stuff :)

Hi macboy

1. Yes, the master EQ is enabled. It is set low gain +3, mid gain +1, freq1.25, hi gain +1. If I turn the master EQ off, the volume does not chane, only the overall sound goes a little less full and bright.

2. No, there is no difference between stereo and mono in volume.

3. No, they´re not equally low. Input signal - i sent a line signal peaking in around -4dB and the output was about -5dB so I can say, this was OK.

4. If I select Menu/Mixer-tuning, then I see all the tracks are marked as dry

5. Mixer/tuning setting are set to maximum (127)

Just wondering if 'TALK" is activated when you go to the "MIC" tab.

Check www.korgpa.com for full reset explanation. It should be the same as PA800. Download the OS and resources.

Make sure you first make a BACK UP !

However, considering the fact that the AUDIO INPUT works well on OUTPUT, I rather think it could be a hardware problem.

Any expertise here ?

In the forum of the German Korg distributor there was a long thread about the weak signal from the Pa500 Line Out. It was confirmed that the line out indeed was weaker than the other KorgPa instruments, but is still within the specifications given by Korg, so no action from Korg is to be expected to solve this. The only solution given is to use some kind of pre-amplification or to upgrade to Pa800 or Pa2X Pro !!??
