Korg CX-3 Update Problem

Post by vajra »

Hello,

Yesterday I attempted to update my CX-3 to version 2.0. I first ran into a problem when it failed while updating the main processor. I tried running the update again 5 more times and kept running into the same problem. After checking my MIDI interface (An M-Audio box) and all the USB and midi cables, the update launcher asked me again to test the MIDI configuration. However, I then received the message "The MIDI configuration test failed, because an unexpected response was received from the device attached to the MIDI ports specified." I continue to have this problem, the CX-3 screen still reads "Ipl V2.00 000422AB", and I can't get it out of this mode.

How can I either restore my CX-3 to its original settings or successfully update?

Thanks,
V

Best thing that I would do after a failed firmware update is to call Korg tech support.

I just had the same problem updating a friend's CX3. It went through the tests with no problems.

I notice there aren't any responses - anybody else had this problem? If so, what did the repair cost?

Updating CX3

Post by tborne »

Hi,
I just had the exact same problem described above (ran into a problem while updating the main processor.) I get the same message on the screen (Ipl V2.00 000422AB) and am frozen.
Do I need to replace the motherboard? And if so, how much would this cost?
Thanks,
T

Sorry, I should have followed up on this.

For anyone who attempts the firmware upgrade:

1) Do not trust the test program. I did, still had a problem.

2) Use the "quietest" computer you have. That's probably the oldest computer you have. You want one that is running the least number of background programs. You want one where the disk light stays off for long periods of time when you aren't typing or using the mouse. Avoid any computer with multi-media indexing software.

As far as solving the problem, it turns out the two ROMs containing the latest OS can be purchased from Korg for a minimal fee, around $8.00 each if I remember right. Since they are surface mount rather than socketed you can't simply open up the case, pop out the old ones and plug in the new ones. At the same time the pins are .1" apart so it shouldn't be a big deal for a local MI repair shop, or someone with basic SMD soldering experience, to replace them.

Ernie,

Good info. Can you send more specific info on the ROMS? Part numbers, exact prices, where to get from, etc?
Current Korg Gear: KRONOS 88 (4GB), M50-73 (PS mod), RADIAS-73, Electribe MX, Triton Pro (MOSS, SCSI, CF, 64MB RAM), SQ-64, DVP-1, MEX-8000, MR-1, KAOSSilator, nanoKey, nanoKontrol, 3x nanoPad 2, 3x DS1H, 7x PS1, FC7 (yes Korg, NOT Yamaha).

Ok ... hope this will help someone as I have been through an adventure trying to get my CX-3 going again after a failed update. First, You can get the 2 ROM chips. The part #'s in the manual are: #320012268 and #320012269. The guy at Korg's US parts distributer which is @ PartsIsParts.com told me that the 2nd ROM chip #320012269 was discontinued and would not be able to get. He was totally not helpful and offered a new Mainboard for $750.00 plus tax and shipping. Meanwhile, I emailed support at Korg UK and Korg Canada. Both explained that the discontinued chip had been replaced by part # 320012305. They had it in stock along with the first chip, however they could not ship them to the US. Great ! huh? Ok I then looked back on the PartsIsParts website and they actually had the 2nd chip #320012305 in stock so I ordered it online and got it within 2 days. They did not have the other chip in stock. I then called Korg Canada back and they told me that Sweetwater.com in the US could sell me the ROM's so I contacted them ... they had the other chip #320012268 and shipped it to me. When they arrived I began disassembly of the CX-3. I removed the 2 old chips with a hot air station gun and installed the new chips soldering each pad individually. Cost of #320012268 that mounts on IC18 was 41.25. Cost of #320012305 that mounts on IC6 was 52.00. I had to buy several tools ... magnify glass headset ... hot air station ... etc. I spent close to $250.00 on tools and parts all together but it was worth every penny when I fired it up after reassembly and it worked like a charm with a new OS 2.01. Hope this helps someone save some time and effort. Peace!

PS = Ohernie is correct. DO NOT TRUST THE TESTS if you attemp to upgrade yourself. It may very well cost you as it did me.

CX3 update also failed

I just attempted the update to which the main processor portion hung up. WTF? KORG gets less than an F. I'm an seasoned Electrical Engineer and designing/ selling a product with serious bugs is one thing, but making replacement docs/ parts / support unavailable is unforgivable. After 30 years of over 45 pro synths and keyboards, this will be last endorsement for KORG .
