EXs sample data loaded by PRELOAD.KSC

There have been some questions about which of the data is loaded, and which is not.

The PRELOAD.KSC file loads all of the data in EXs1, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.

EXs3 and 4 are loaded partially, as detailed below.

i was JUST at a SamAsh in PA today trying out a Kronos 61... i noticed this! I saw some things from EXs4 were loaded, but not everything. What was the purpose of this? BTW i think i'm in love...

The EXs4 acoustic and electric pianos were not included by default, since the SGX-1 and EP-1 largely supersede them. Not loading them saves memory.

So... IF you unload any of this..say to make room for a new sound library, you have to be concerned which combi will be left without the program or EXi you removed ..correct?

Can you please clarify two questions for me.

1: Are all the EXs Expansions loaded by KSC files on the KRONOS ?
2: If so, is this KSC file editable so that we can only load part of EXs if desired?

If yes to both, then my KSC GEN program could be updated to manage all EXs Libraries for the KRONOS.

I'm pretty confident Korg will allow the use of a ram upgrade considering how much it is needed, and I really hope they add user sample streaming in an os upgrade..PLEEEEASE korg!

Yeah, at this point, that is going to be a necessity for me....the RAM upgrade part.

To clarify:

Are all the .KSC included in all the available
combis (default) ,present when we power up
the Kronos ?

or will some combis ( and program evidently)
be effected by the .KSC not loaded

Is there some .KSC that are not in use with
the present (default) program and/or combis ?

preload.KSC is locked (I think) I need to check.

BUT, you can use the global section to unload some samples and then create another .KSC that you can load upon startup. See the thread Kronos and the Musician. I link to a thread on this that Busch talks about this.

preload.KSC loads on startup, but you can load a different .KSC for more or less samples in memory.

There are some misunderstandings here. Removing a Program doesn't do anything to a KSC file. KSC files point to sample data - not Programs. The PRELOAD.KSC file in the factory folder is the real one; there's no secret file. Making changes in RAM doesn't affect the KSC files on disk - until you save, of course.

The following sections of the manuals should be helpful:

Parameter Guide: Global pages "0–3: KSC Auto-Load" and "0–4: Sample Management"

Yes.

Yes. They are similar to KSC files in the OASYS. See the manual references above; on the instrument, you can browse into KSCs similar to browsing PCGs, and load individual Multisamples and Samples/Drum Samples; you can also un-load individual MS/S/DS once loaded. Either way, you can save the results as a new KSC.

There's also a full description of the KSC file format in the Parameter Guide appendix: "KSC (Korg Sample Collection) files." It's plain text, so it should be easy to work with.

KSC GEN for the Kronos would be a great addition. Great that Dan said it would work OK. How long will it take you to adapt it to the Kronos? Will this allow us to get rid of the damn GM Programs?
