My top 10 solos would probably all be Tony Banks. _________________ Korg Kronos 61 (2); Kurzweil PC4; Casio Privia PX-350m; Macbook Pro |

Billy Curry's solo during Gary Numan's live version of On Broadway - No smart alec shredding, very simple and to the point, but makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. _________________ Synth DIY Projects |

A toss up for me and neither are crazy shredders:
Rick Wright's understated lead work on Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Keith Emerson's iconic lead on Lucky Man and From the Beginning
Yes, I do love Kevin Moore's trading off with Petrucci (Dream Theater was a better band with Moore - all due respect to Rudess) and Wakeman, Banks, and others have of course created stunning leads, but there is something quite catching to me in the three I mentioned above. Could be my tastes run consistently because for me, the greatest GUITAR solo of all time in rock is the second solo in Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. Melodic, tasteful, and such an undercurrent of power.
Ahimsa,

Since you said Synth, then I guess for me Michael Brecker with his EWI was one of the greatest virtuoso synth soloists of all time (for me).
I do have a soft spot for Herbie Hancock's solo on Night in Tunisia with his minimoog through a Boogie amp!
I also really like the Lyricon soloing in the 2nd Yellowjackets album.
Of course there is always Frankenstein! _________________ Korg Kronos, RD-88, Yamaha VL1, Deep Mind 6, Korg Kross, author of unrealBook for iPad. |

"Learning to Smile" by INXS. I think it's a Roland SH-7. It's one of the first synth tones I ever heard and the sound and melody both made a huge impression on me as a child listening to that song on tape. _________________ - cynkh -
