DX7 Patches?

Post by hammondcuni »

Has anyone loaded patches into Kronos" Mod7"? Just curious on how patches sound.

I've had the original DX7 as well as the DX7S and, to my surprise after doing a quick search on the web, I've found many of the patches I've used to play with back in the eighties. I've even found the DX7 Hypra ROM cartdridge, a rare pack with 4x2x4 banks of patches I had back then...

And of course they sound exactly like on the original! :)
I've made a selection of those and I'm patiently waiting for the extra free banks to keep them all loaded in, add my own custom effects, etc...

I'm sad though becasue I've saved my DX7S patches in sys'ex format before selling it a few years ago, but the Kronos cannot read those ("original" DX7 patches only). I haven't saved my original DX7 custom sounds when I sold the brown meanie in the early nineties...

Have you thought about putting the PCG on this forum in the download section? I think lots of people will be happy to see this.

Oops 200.000 ... that would result in a lot of PCG files. Maybe an idea to add support to convert it by PCG Tools.

That sound's like alot of work tbh. There are most likely alot of duplicates as well. Tho its shame that there are most likely some very nice patches somewhere in there but the enormous amount makes it impossible to go throught all of them. If somebody finds any nice ones and perhaps could compile a PCG file.

Sounds like a small project to find out equal patches .. I have once called I could generate a patch list from a PCG resulting in PCG Tools ... maybe I should also add a patch list generator for DX7 sysex files ... cannot be that hard if I do it 'simple'.

I did a quick check, most files are 4104 or 1650 bytes. I don't know the complete structure, however I could get the names of the patches in a file quite easily.

Would it help if I can generate patch lists for these files? If so, I will add it as a separate 'command' in PCG Tools.
You cannot do anything with the file in PCG Tools, except showing the patch list but it might be helpful to find patches easily.

Later I can check if it is possible to copy/paste them with help of PCG Tools (copy from SYSEX DX file to a Kronox program). However, this can be more tricky.

that's very easy

To load a bank of DX7 sounds:
1. Transfer the DX7 .SYX file to KRONOS‐readable
media, such as a USB flash drive.
2. Connect the media to the KRONOS.
3. Press the front‐panel DISK button to enter Disk
mode.
4. Go to the Load page.
5. In the Drive Select parameter, select the media
from step 2, above.
6. Select the DX7 .SYX file.
7. Press the LOAD button.
A dialog box will appear, allowing you to select a bank
into which to load the sounds. Since DX7 banks
contain 32 sounds, while a KRONOS bank contains
128, you can also select where to place the DX7 sounds
within the KRONOS bank: into Programs 0‐31, 32‐63,
64‐95, or 96‐127.
8. Select the bank and Program range into which to
load the sounds

Looks almost like loading patches from a normal PCG.
