Lets talk FM (MOD-7)

Post by BasariStudios »

Dan, i cant figure out since its more complex then a lot of other synths,
FM in Kronos, is it Linear or Exponential?
Also...how would i approach it to achieve Phase Distortion...i know it might
be possible but not as correct as CZ but is there any certain technique?
Anyone can input their thoughts please?

We can also expand the discussion, i am obsessed with FM and i wish people
would know what can MOD-7 do. Forget Samples, forget Physical Modeling,
forget anything. I find any other synthezis almost boring lately and i am talking
in general, not just Kronos...but this is Kronos related now.

I wonder if a lot of people here use FM on Novation, Nordlead, Alesis...
they can all do complex Frequency Modulation.

Thanks

Have you tried Sytrus from FLStudio? I know it imports DX7 patches.

If so what did you think?

I mostly used DX7, Novation, Nordlead, FM7/8 and now Kronos for FM Synthezis.
I never liked or worked with CW or FL. I can give it a try but do i need the whole
FruityLoops thing or i can use it as a standalone?
The only thing from them i love is Toxic Biohazard.

I'm a long time FM addict too. It's amazingly expressive - and a pain in the kidneys to get out of it what you expect! Since I know nothing of Fourier wave math, that leaves me to fumble in the dark by trial and error, edit existing patches and what not. But the expression from a good FM patch is unbeatable. Which... tells me I need to get off of the intranets and back to the Kronos. :P

I think you can buy it as a standalone version (runs as a VST in any DAW).

They often have special sales.

Through the website there are some Sytrus videos. Probably heaps on Youtube.

SynthGuy, i was lucky enough few years back to take few courses on FM and
its helping me a lot. I am not a master of Theory on it but i can be a Master
of tweaking it. In most cases i usualy know what to do and go exactly where
i need to be to achieve something i already planned in my head. There is
nothing more expressive then this, with some of the Sounds especially
Violins and Clarinets i can challenge Kronos Samples anytime with MOD-7.

KSynth, thanks.

If you want to treat Fm oscillators as standalone waveform generators then it's an
easy way to accomplish a sound creation , but isn't actually a FM result ,since modulation
& inter-modulation knowledge is required in case you want to predefine and design a
specific sound from scratch and not just fooling around with practical experiment !
I've designed DX II FD sounds that time period that still can found around in Fm patches.
But the fact is that FM synthesis although is outstanding for Pads, aggressive
metallic sounds and E.Pianos,, is far from creating real music instruments.

Deppends how you approach FM, for me it is the easiest even though is
probably one of the most complex synthezis forms. PD from Casio is similar
and i started with that...on that one you actually distord the Phase.
And yes, this guy knows his stuff too.

It's a very good tutorial! Shows you A to Z. From how to import fm patch to how to tweak them.

He explains each section of mod-7. It's good because not enough detail to loose a beginner but enough to get a good complete overview and get anyone going with mod-7.

He has another tutorial there that's just as good.

Coyote, please make more Kronos tutorial!
