Memory Full ! What do I do.

Post by runningman67 »

Last night when I was writing to the sequencer a window saying memory full popped up.

I deleted some other songs and then I could carry on.

Whats the problem? Do I need a RAM upgrade, an SSD upgrade or both?

The shop isn't sure, but I don't think it is a fault. I have about 40 full songs which use a lot of data and I've got two of Qr's sound libraries (which are excellent). Other than that, it a stock Kronos 73.

Hi runningman67,

i think you reached the limit of the allowed midi data in the sequencer, you have 40 songs in there (which is quite a lot) and i've heared some of your tracks (which are excellent) and to me it sounds like your compositions are well done with lot's of note events and other midi events.

The Kronos sequencer allowes the following maximum memory:
400,000 MIDI events (with MIDI data only) or 300,000 Audio events (with Audio data only)

Now 400.000 midi events looks a lot, but if you have a lot of timbres per songs in use then you will rather quick reach that limit.

The soundsets you use from me don't use any extra memory, these are based on the internal Rom wave sounds.

So i don't think there's any problem with your kronos, your compositions just pushes the sequencer to it's limits

Thanks QuiRobinez

How do I get around this problem. I don't want to delete my favourite songs as I still want to fine tune them and improve them etc......

Although I know how to write music and use the Kronos sequencer. I am not technically minded. Should I just start a new directory?

can't you just save out your songs to a .seq file, reinitialize and start over with blank song slots? Whenever I work with the sequencer (which admittedly is not very much, I save each song/project to it's own .seq file.

hahaha, i think you are just way to productive making music!

what i would do in your case is to create albums from that collections, so let's say you have 40 songs ready, just think which 10 songs fits together very wel for each album and create 4 albums for that. That way you have enough spare room to create extra songs for that album (CD) if you got inspired.

Here's how to do that:
- save all the sequencer songs to a new file: <give it a name like AllMySongs)
- then reload all songs to be sure that you saved them all correctly
- then remove the 30 songs that don't belong to your album (or any other number of songs)
- Set the 10 remaining songs in a sequential order in the sequencer
- save the song library with the album name you have in mind.

- then load the allmysongs library again.
- repeat the procedure for album 2, 3 and 4

Now you have 4 albums on your kronos disc which you can expand at will.

Personally i really like to work with albums in my DAW. Because all my music is rather different ranging from ambient to dubstep and jazz to classical, it's easy to add new songs to those libraries so that eventually i have a CD complete with music in that style.

Even when you only create one style of music it can be refreshing to work in themes. For instance when you create a cd full of songs based on planet names or sea life animals it's much easier to keep your songs in the same theme and sound. That way the complete endresult really tells a story.

Loading albums in the sequencer takes less than a second, so it's easy to work again on a specific album or just play along with an album.

It would be nice if every song you ever created was in the sequencer but that's not possible. Of course there is a way around this for when you perform live. Just create wav files of all your songs and assign these as a backing track per song where you add the corresponding sounds of the kronos that you play live in the sequencer mode. This hardly takes any memory of the sequencer.

Thanks.

I know that I squeeze a lot out of the sequencer and when I save to disc I save to one of two directories, which have different types of my music on. I have nearly filled one up with maximum data for the sequencer. Having read what 'QR' has written. I think it is just a case of writing to a new directory..............

If that is the case and QuiRobinez confirms it. It means I don't need to upgrade anything and with the money I have saved I'll buy 'QR's dream piano library.

HAHA You have me sussed. :D :D

Everytime I switch on my Kronos, it is to try and start something new !!

I'll just set up new directories. I finally understand.

Thanks QR

You can OPEN up a SNG file and LOAD one or more songs, if you want. This way, you can mix and match from different directories.

If you record your sequences in real time, they may contain a lot of aftertouch MIDI events. If that's the case, I would suggest you thin them out!

Jeebustrain- I do not believe the Kronos has any kind of a a ".seq" file format. this might confuse the original poster. There is a .SNG file format.
