Looks like 0.1.8 did the trick. I tested by unplugging the M1 before running Flex a second time, got the UM-ONE not found error message. Reconnected and restarted Flex, no more crossed USB devices. And yeah, as far as the apostrophe issue, that's an easy thing to avoid. Probably not the best ...

You're correct on both. I had done some disconnecting and reconnecting of the cables when I started to notice the input device issues.
