Unless you are using the built in speaker each instrument needs its own audio connection so yes - to hear them both you need a mixer of some sort.

Hi - i just got a zero 8 and am having the same odd behavior with channel routing (in and out)

recording from track 1 sends to 2 tracks (one left and one right) in live.
