Yes, you can also send MIDI notes to the iMS-20.
The synth responds to MIDI channel 1, the drum parts respond to channels 2 to 7. So once you set up your clips in Ableton to send on the correct MIDI channels, you can use the iMS-20 just like a multi-timbral hardware synth.
