Yes, you can also send MIDI notes to the iMS-20.

The synth responds to MIDI channel 1, the drum parts respond to channels 2 to 7. So once you set up your clips in Ableton to send on the correct MIDI channels, you can use the iMS-20 just like a multi-timbral hardware synth.

You could try to send MIDI from your MacBook to the MicroKorg via USB, and then use a MIDI interface like m-audio's USB Uno to connect the MicroKorg's MIDI Through to your iPad.

Works great with both an Akai LPK 25 and a Korg nanoKontrol. Does not work with my no-name USB hub, so I could not try out if it is possible to connect both of the above at the same time.
