List of tested MIDI controllers for iMS20.

Post by Krog »

Hi all,

Now that Korg have updated the iMS20 app to support external MIDI control I thought it would be good to start a thread to list tested and proven MIDI controllers that play well with the app.

I would be personally interested in seeing if the Korg Nano series of contollers work as there is some debate about how much power the iPad throws out over it's dock connection to unpowered external devices.

So, if you've hooked up your iPad and iMS20 to a MIDI controller, post the info here for us all to share

Cheers,

Krog :D

hello !

i just started fiddling with the iMS-20 and an m-audio Keyrig 25.
Seems to work great !
first i connected the keyboard while in the app ... and got a message saying "not enough power..." so then i tried again by first connecting the keyboard and then starting the app and it worked fine ... no power supply needed for that keyboard !

i couldn't find yet how to assign the keyrig's knobs to params in the app ... but they do work with defaulted assignements ....

I've tried with M-Audio Axiom 25 (2nd gen).

I've tried with M-Audio Axiom 25 (2nd gen).
It works fine without extra power supply.
I've also tested with the E-MU midi1x1 Tab, a MIDI USB converter and it works fine with no additional power supply.

Hi everybody.

NanoKey seems to work.
Except for the Pitch Up / Pitch Down buttons.
I will make some other tests.
Octave Up / Octave Down buttons do work.

M-Audio MidiSport Uno MIDI interface seems to work. I connected my M3 to the iPad/iMS20 and it worked. I will try the interface with all the other MIDI devices I have.

Hope this is of some interest!

At this point is there any advantage to the MIDI Mobilizer vs the Apple camera connection kit???

yes. if your keyboard doesn't have usb out. MIDI Mobilizer is sturdier and less likely to pull on the ipad's 30-pin connector than if you used a camera connection kit ($29) with an emu 1x1 ($34 on amazon). plus ipad doesn't recognize all usb MIDI connections. it ignored both my vsynth and my emu xboard 25 -- both class-compliant, i believe. and MIDI Mobilizer's other advantage seems to be with iphone/ipod touch, which can't use the camera connector kit. i'm thinking of getting one, unless someone sees something i don't (which is possible, of course).

Novation Remote 25 SL.

Connected it right after the update and it works great. You need to plug in the external power adapter though, but great to play the iMS20 with a keyboard and turn the knobs.

Note:
I connected it via a standard USB cable, not a USB-MIDI interface.

I use the M-Audio Midisport Uno instead of the MIDI Mobilizer, but the concept is the same. There is another advantage, in my humble opinion. Which is: being able to use the iPad instrument (the iMS20 in this case) in a non-mobile MIDI setup.

For example, I use a M-Audio Midisport 8x8 to connect and manage all my MIDI instruments, and now the iMS20 can be part of that setup.

Just my 2 cents.
