Combining Sets

Post by AmirInTexas »

Dear fourm members,

Is there a step by step guide somewhere that explains how to combine three samples?
I know that it is exteremly time consuming and challenging. I have done this before with my PA-80 where I combined two 8mb cards to one 16mb card and it took me 5 months to do it. I don't mind that, I just need to know how.

Let's say you have 3 20MB+ samples and want to combine them to one full 64MB set.

Also, I'm confused where this could be done on the keyboard or a PC?

Thanks,

Sharp has made a great video describing how to combine samples on the Pa1X. See it here. The Pa800 works exactly the same way. Actually you can learn a lot about Pa800 sampling and sound programming by searching the Pa1X forum here at Korg Forums.

Kind regards,

TommyF,

This is a great video, thanks for sharing. But I am more interested in styles than sounds. From what I undrestand once you mix the sets the drum kits needs to be re-mapped otherwise they won't work or sound right. That's the part I'm interested.

This video of course is first step but I think there are other steps to it.

Sorry Amir, but I don't have any experience in merging different drum sets, but I would like to make a correction to my comments about merging of samples:

Actually it is a lot easier to do on the Pa800 than I thought. It is not described in the Pa800 manual - but out of curiosity I read the manual addendum of the new Pa1X 3.0 upgrade and here it is described how to do it:

--- Citation Begin ---

Merging PCM samples from various sources:

When you load a .SET folder, all PCM samples in memory are
deleted. So, there is no way to merge different samples by loading
complete .SET folders.
To merge samples from several sources, you must load single
Sounds or Drum Kits based on external PCM samples.
Delete all samples and multisamples
1.
If you want to delete all samples and multisamples already
in memory, press the SOUND button to access the Sound
mode, then press the RECORD button to access the Sampling
mode.
2.
While in Sampling mode, choose the “Delete Sample” command
from the page menu. Check the “All Samples, Multi-
Sample, DrumSamples” option, and press OK to delete all
samples and multisamples.
Warning:
Before deleting, be sure to have a copy of any
important data you don’t want to lose.
3.
Choose the “Exit from Record” command from the page
menu, to exit from the Sampling mode.
Create a new .SET of samples
1.
Press the DISK button to access the Disk mode. Go to the
Load page.
2.
Open a first .SET folder containing some of the PCM samples
to merge. Open the SOUND folder, then one of the
USER banks, and choose the first of the Sounds or Drum
Kits based on samples you would like to load. Press Load,
and choose a target User location in memory.
The Sound or Drum Kit is loaded, together with the PCM
samples it is based on.
3.
Do the same with any subsequent Sound or Drum Kit
whose samples you would like to load.
4.
When finished loading, save a new .SET folder, being sure
the PCM option is checked in the Save All dialog.

--- Citation End ---

I have tetsted it and it works great on the Pa800 with the current version 1.01 OS.

Kind regards,
Tommy

Tommy,

Thank you so much. This is a lot easier than how I was doing it. I was following the PA1x video but this is much easier.

I hope to find the rest of the information I'm seeking somehow.

I tried the above procedure and I loaded about 5 kits with there own samples from the first Set and they all played the right samples but when I loaded another Kit from a different Set it did not play the right samples and it is all screwed up playing the wrong samples.

I did only try it with multisamples. It has already been reported here that the Pa800 has some problems with user drum sets. There are also a few bugs related to import of Triton programs and samples. Now that Korg has finished OS 3.0 for the Pa1X I hope that we will soon see a bug fix release for the Pa800

Well it worked perfectly for me. I was able to mix three different sets together within couple of hours or less. The only thing I had to do was to point the drumkits to their new location, not a big deal.

Thank you Tommy, you don't know how greatful I'm for this tip.

It really sux..this is the deal:
I load the REAL DRUMS CARD for example, i delete all the KITS except the
first 4, go to SAMPLING MODE and DELETE ALL UNASIGNED SAMPLES.
It does, they are out of memory but the names are stil there, and the next
SAMPLE loads from number 400 while all before that is just empty names.
You cant get rid of them...now you restart and reload the 4 KITS hoping it
will load only the necesary 25 SAMPLES and REASIGN them on its own...
NO! LOADS everything again with empty names.
Next, you restart with PCM AUTOLOAD OFF, you take the USB disk out, you
ERASE the SET from USER, you go to PROGRAM MODE, click RECORD and it
LOADS the same $hit again, from where???

HOW DO I GET THE SAMPLING MEMORY COMPLETELY EMPTY, WITH NOTHING,
NO EMPTY NAMES, NO SAMPLES NOTHING...YOU RESTART ITS EMPTY,
ONCE YOU PRESS RECORD IT LOADS ON ITS OWN...FROM WHERE???

Yes, true, but how the hell do you get RID of the empty names and positions,
why doesnt it make it BLANK? Next time when you TURN ON the synth and you
wanna load some SAMPLES from scratch, it loads the last set right away, once you press RECORD...and yes PC AUTOLOAD OFF, USB disk out,
SET in USER SSD deleted...where do they come from? Out of nowhere?
