Classic Synth Sounds

Post by durangodave »

Hey folks,

Anyone perfected The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" on the Radias? Also, are there any good sites where I can download synth patches that recreate classic songs?

Cheers,

Welcome to the forum! A friend of mine is Rabbits kybd tech. and actually was The Who's kybd player for their N. Am. part of this past tour when Rabbit's wife was in her final stages of cancer. They still use Pete's original tapes and Zack triggers them (WGFA, Baba, WAY), but I've played it many a time on various kybds. With the Radias you can get a very cool WGFA from a preset - DamprRtryOrg and select Timber 2 and go ahead tweak it to your liking and play. If you use any organ patch it is just much easier to play by not using and arp.

I've got an R3 that I'm programming a bunch of 70's songs-including WGFA and Baba O'riley etc. I presume R3 patches can be ported to Radias (and not the other way around). You're welcome to the R3 patches, it's going to be a while before I can afford a Radias...

Here's where you can find my R3 patches and a few audio clips:

http://wilsonics.com/korgr3/Wont%20Get% ... g%20r3.mp3

http://wilsonics.com/korgr3/baba%20oril ... g%20r3.mp3

I'd love to get my R3 patches for these songs closer to perfect! The organ that was used on Baba (Lowery TB01?) had a marimba preset that triggered the notes a bit differently than is common. I think Pete Townshend ran the out through an S/H Filter to chop it up. I saw a youtube video where he explains all this. I added a bit of "key click" to my patches because on stage, to help us stay in time, the click really helps. I put the click on knob 1 so it is easy to turn down or up as desired. If you tweak these sounds, I'd love to hear about it!

I saw a Radias video from NAMM that showed Baba...I assumed that was a Radias Preset.

Cheers for the reply.

Your stuff is sounding pretty cool. I play piano, but I'm pretty much a beginner when it comes to this synth stuff so I've not got my head around it all yet. What effects do you put on to get the WGFA sound? I guess it's a trigger arpeggiator on an organ sound, but what else do you use?

For Effects I used a flanger and a phaser and a Wet Plate Reverb trying to emulate the original sound. The arpeggiator is set to trigger. I tweak EG2(Volume Envelope) and the arp's gate time to get a tight sound. I added a bit of very short noise using EG3 to give the sound a sharper attack transient. I used a DWGS Organ2 wave, but I'm thinking there is probably a better choice.

Your mp3 sounds good. Sounds like some solid programming...bravo...
I searched the forum and didn't see a way to port R3 sounds to the Radias. Does someone know how to do this?
I have been using the MS2000 with the Korg CX-3 as a sound source, for my WGFA sound. It works well, but I am looking into cutting back my current live rig. That's why I bought the M3-73 / Radias combination...
PA5X-76, Nautilus-73, Kronos-73, M3-73, Radias-R, Triton Extreme 61, CX-3, N1R, Micro-X, Kontrol49, MicroStation, T3 workstation, Mini-Korg 700s, RK100s, MS-20i controller
