knob assign and ableton live/any other program

my question, or, we may call it problem is that i can't quite figure out how to use the 'knob assign' buttons. i've read the manual up and down but i don't get any closer to what i want to do.

what is it i'm trying to do?

well, i thought that i could map like this:
pad#9 volume knob in live
pad#10 pan knob in live
pad#11 pitch knob in live
pad#12 gain knob in live
... and so on..
and then i could just hit 'knob 1 assign' + 'pad#' and i would be able to control the knob i had mapped to that pad on my pK assignable knob.

this just doesn't work, .. uhm.
any ideas?

here i go replying the answer myself.

what i needed to do is:

hit 'knob assign' + 'pad#' , then map the knob.
not the other way around
