Next purchase for newb, suggestions?

Post by hooks85 »

So Im very new to the whole music thing. Picked up my electribe esx and learned it very quick and absolutely love it. Now I have around $600 to spend on myself for Christmas. What would a newbie have the most fun with that would add a lot of options for me musically. Im so torn and honestly I dont know how everything works together. I was thinking i could get an EMX because I heard they work well together. Would any synth be a good addition to an esx?

I've seen a few videos of the Kaoss Pad 3 and think that would be amazing? I'd like to stick with hardware rather than software. If you have lots of hardware, what do you wish you would have gotten first to pair with your ESX?

Im just looking for general overall direction for adding to a newly started collection. Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

Personally, if you're good at sampling and enjoy the SX1, you'll love the MX1. For the price, it's a good addition to what you're working with. Having both of the machines together is worth nearly a grand in my opinion, except for the fact that you're a little limited with tracks and such, and the space on the xD\SD cards is a real killer.

If you're looking to maybe learn piano and are looking for a good synth, the Micro Korg is definitely a robust little addition to what you're working with. It really depends on where you're trying to take your sound I suppose...

The Microkorg is a great little synth for a couple of reasons.

1. It is cheap (300 bucks will get you one over EBAY)

2. It has a great editing program that you can utilize to really get great sounds out of the machine.

3. It has a vocoder! (The mic is cheap, consider invensting in a good mic sometime down the road) I use Vocoder with all my tracks and it sounds pretty good (I think).

4. Great basslines!

5. You can Midi the ESX and MK together for arpeg goodness. See a thread in this forum about that.

Buuttttt, Alexis Micron's are insane, with a worse vocoder.

It is up to you friend, do your research!

Good Luck!

I'm so glad I asked. After watching some youtube videos, I think the Micro Korg is definately what im looking for. I think that will take me a long while to learn and get good with, and will keep me busy for quite some time. Thanks!

i think you should get a snth. not a micorkorg though. they are extremely hard to program. maybe a ms 20 or a jp 8000(im sure thats blasphemy for this KORG forum though...hehehe)

I just bought a micron and sold my microKorg, reason? Because the Alesis micron is more powerful, does what mk can do and more. I just bought it for the 40 band vocoder, and ended up using it as one of my emx-1 sequenced synths. If I were to choose between micron, mk, or a JP-8000 or JP-8080, the choice is going to be definitely the JP-8000 or JP-8080. But, those are kinda hard to find nowadays. So my choice is now the micron. They go for the same price as the mk, new and used.

if you're a newb, do not buy any new gear.... simple as that, keep it simple and learn from what u got... you're gonna end up selling most of it for dimes when you realise that it's not for you.... get to know everything first, or better yet get a copy of ableton so you can learn the deep down concepts of everything.. after that transitioning to hardware will be a breeze.
