Help - Recording in\out in Stereo with EMX1\SX1

Post by p4ttern »

If anyone could offer any help, I would very much appreciate it. This should be a basic question I think I'm just missing something.

I have two Korg Electribes, one EMX1 and an ESX1.
I have these two machines synced via midi I\O so that one is clocked internally and one externally. Piece of cake.

What my dilemma entails is the stereo out.

I'm running two 1/4" patch cables from the LR outputs on the EMX1 into this old powered 8 channel mixer. Channels 7 and 8 have two inputs each, which i'm assuming are meant for stereo input recording. So the Korg goes out the LR outputs into the Powered Mixer LR inputs. My headphones are coming out of the monitor jack on the front of the Powered Mixer (not the actual powered back outputs). When I go to test it out, I hold a synth key and I hear the sound, but when I pan from left to right to test the stereo end of things the sound doesn't scape from the left ear to the right ear in the headphones as if it would if I just had the headphones plugged straight into the Korg. Why is this? If you need me to clarify my setup with pictures I can do that in a jiffy.

What my ultimate goal is to sync up my two korgs via midi so one is a master (MX1) and one slave (SX1), and then sync those to my computer so my computer starts to play, along with the slave ESX1, when I press play on the EMX1. Then I wanted to hook my midi controller up through my computer so I could use a chorded keyboard and my unlimited amount of synths from Cubase and\or Reason. Then I wanted to take my Powered Mixer monitor output and put that into my Tascam US-122 interface for my computer.

This way I can have my SX1 and computer synced with my MX1, and my controller manipulating my VSTis, and then all the sound can go through the mixer, and into Cubase via my Tascam interface.

My big problem is the stereo part, I want to record in stereo and I can't seem to get it to work right? Any help would be much appreciated. I've been lurking here for a while. And like I said, I can post pics of everything if you need me to to better understand.

Thx!

I'm thinking it's your headphones going from the monitor output. Try putting some audio from another source that pans and see if that will separate with your setup. Often monitor outs are in mono.

I was thinking that might be the problem. Based on what you say about mixer monitor outputs being mono, you're probably correct. So, how should I go about getting the output in stereo? It has stereo RCA outputs and I do have a surround system, but it doesn't have a headphones out on the surround. I also have my interface that has a left and right input with a headphone out, but all of the outputs on the back of my monitor are powered and i don't think i can hook headphones or an interface into powered outputs, right? any suggestions?

edit: yeah i also meant to add that even with the sx into the mixer, the pans don't shift left and right either.

Surely the mixer has line or mic outputs. There is no phone (headphone) out? Sounds like you might need a cheap mixer with headphone out. You could take the phono line outs into a recorder or computer and monitor through that. You can also buy headphone amps with multiple outs. They can be had for less than $100.

I actually borrowed my buddy's Fostex 16 channel mixer today after I got out of work. Ran both korg's stereo outs to 4 channels on the mixer. Bought a new pair of AKG k240 studios for $75 =) Might return them for Grados, not sure yet. Anyway, on the headphone out on the 16 channel I still don't get a complete pan from left to right on either of the electribes. it does have left and right line outputs next to the headphone jack, i may try that into my interface, and headphone from my interface. will try now...
