Freezing issue with Pa2X

Post by Paolo@Korg »

Hi,

Please continue all discussions about the subject issue in this thread. We will be able to collect all feedback quickly and easier.

The freezing problem reported by some Pa2X users is caused by different reasons than Pa800 - they are not related. We are investigating on them, and will soon have an answer. Please wait still a little.

If your Pa2X does not show any problem when accessing data to disk, use it with confidence. The freezing problem is evident on defective exemplars; if it isn't, the instrument is OK.

Best regards,
Paolo

EDIT: The problem is solved by OS version 1.10.

Ok. so I load a complete 64MB PA800 Set without loading the Global. All is well. As soon as I try to import a multisample it freezes while loading. I have to restart the keyboard. It also froze when I tried to load a sound from another SET. But this time when I restarted the keyboard, some of the samples from that sound where loaded, and some was not. I guess it loaded only the ones that were transfered before freezing.

Another problem.. when using the factory "More Mid Bass!" sound, I also hear one of my user samples mixed with it. So any styles using this sound is unusable.

Also.. I found no proper way of reseting the keyboard to factory defaults. Even if I load the .PKG file from the CD, user style, favorites, sounds, etc.. are still there.

Again.. I would please at least like to know if my PA2X has hardware problems or software. If its hardware, i would like to exchange it for a new one that doesnt have these problems. Taking a brand new keyboard in back to the dealer to have it fixed doesnt make sense to me. Especially after I payed 4300$ Canadian + Tax for it.

Thanks.

Ok, I just noticed something in regards to restoring to factory defaults. I found that if you restore using the OS+Resouces .PKG file, that's included on the bundled CD, it doesnt get rid of user data, (sounds, samples, etc..).

But if you do a full resource restore in the media menu using the .BKP file, it successfully clears everything.

So let's forget about that, and concentrate on the freezing issue. I wanna start using my new PA2X allready....:(

Thanks

Ok.. another way I managed to freeze it.
Even after I did a resource restore and reset everything to factory....
I tried loading individual WAV samples so I can make my own multisample. When I exited sampling mode, it froze. I had to restart the machine.

Just tried again today... hoping that by some freak of nature, it would work. Froze again.

I tried something else today as well.

The same multisample will sometimes freeze the keyboard and sometimes not. So I dont think its the sample data that is corrupted. Or else it would've froze everytime.

I've never been this sad after buying a new toy i've wanted for a long time.

Ok, so Paolo asked me to try something. I did it.. and since then, it hasent frozen once. I loaded around 6 or 7 multisamples, each averaging about 2.5 to 3Mb.

I dont know if I'm allowed to say what I did, so I'll let Paolo say it.

But so far..not even froze once during multisample import.

Thanks Paolo.. you're the best.

Ok, it froze again... but not during multisample import. It froze when I changed from sound mode to style play mode. I had to restart the keyboard.

After restarting, I tried to load a multisample again, and it froze. Had to restart the keyboard. So its back to the way it was.

Also, the factory "More Mid! Bass" sound still plays one of my user samples mixed with it. I checked the sound, the 3rd OSC is assigned to a RAM multisample.

Hi DjStiky,

I think Paolo sent you a program which resets User memory to the cleared state, is that correct?

After running Paolo's program, it seems from your email like your keyboard was working fine until after you imported various unspecified multisamples. It seems like you have a way of testing for memory corruption by checking the "More Mid! Bass" 3rd OSC setting.

So do the "reset" procedure per Paolo's instructions again. Then before importing any multisamples or .SET files check the "More Mid! Bass" 3rd OSC setting. Is it OK?

Then import one multisample. Check the "More Mid! Bass" 3rd OSC setting. Is it OK? Then repeat until you find out which multisample is causing the memory corruption.

Then send the offending multisample together with any .SET file containing it to Paolo.

Hey Rob,

Yes, the file Paolo sent me formats the system SSD. After I followed the procedure to do it, the keyboard was like factory settings.

I loaded my SET, then tried to import a 2.5Mb Multisample.. and this time it did not freeze. And I was able to import another 5 or 6 other multisamples without freezing. I went back into style play mode for a second.. cause I wanted to check something out, then came back into sound mode. So I left the keyboard on sound mode, and had to do something for like 5 minutes, so I left it alone. When I came back, I wanted to go back to style play mode, as soon as I pressed the button, it said "Please Wait" on the screen and it froze. Had to restart the keyboard.
After that.. the same problem was back.. I couldnt import any multisamples, even the same 2.5Mb multisample that had worked earlier.

Now.. I've sent Paolo that SET and that 2.5Mb Multisample since yesterday before he sent me the SSD format .pkg.

So I dont know.. maybe the system SSD is eventualy getting corrupt after a while no matter what you do. I dont think it has anything to do with the samples. But only Paolo can confirm that.

But I am going to try it again and see at what point the "More Mid! Bass" sound gets assigned a RAM multisample in OSC 3.

Ok, I just did the format again and loaded OS+Resource.pkg file. So I'm back to factory settings.

I checked the "More Mid! Bass" sound right away. OSC3 is assigned to RAM multisample #60 by default. Since there is nothing loaded yet, it sounds normal. I'm guessing as soon as a multisample takes that spot (#60) I'll start hearing it.
So I guess its just an error in the default Musical Resources. Has nothing to do with the freezing problem.

I could start loading my stuff on it now, and I'm sure it wont freeze right away. But eventually, it will.

At this point.. I'm stuck.. dont know what to do. I'm gonna wait for Paolo I guess.

What I'm wondering is if all PA2Xs have my problem. If its only mine and a few others in the same batch, then I'd rather just change mine for another one that doesnt have this problem and not waste any more time than I've allready have. I'm waiting for Paolo to let me know what to do. I've allready contacted my dealer about the problem as well, and they've left a message to Korg Canada's technician. But I think he is at the NAMM show. They havent called me back yet.

I have a party this coming Friday and I dont want to cancel last minute. I'll be screwing the organizers and myself at the same time.. lol.

So I guess I'll wait for Paolo.

Thanks
