Potential Zero mixer buyer. Any happy Zero4 users out there?

Post by rebelguy »

Hey Folks,

So I am in the market for a new mixer and am looking into the Zero4. From what I have been reading most of the problems are happening with the Zero 4 but there isn't a ton of feedback on the 4. Anyone want to share any happy or horror stories on the mixer? Is it worth the money? How do you like the sound quality? Does it compare with a DJM-800 or Rane TTM-57 as far as sound quality? Any major problems you have run into?

Thanks in advance for any feedback. :D

Sure!
first of all the mixer does not have an intuitive interface the sound quality in my opinion is poor. Let me state, I am not an audiophile but this thing lacks mid range punch...maybe depth is the word I am looking for, it sounds very flat. I went back to my ecler smac pro which is broken! Korg has top online marketing activity which makes it hard to get an unbiased opinion on most sites but take my word for it, this thing is average at best, and kory has done little to address individual complaints about the mountain of issues experienced by users. From my perspective they just stopped responding to me! Take my advice, stick to pioneer, rane, vestax, or one of the other trusted names.

Will never buy
korg gear again.

Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate it. Sound quality if one of the key deciding factors for me. I was thinking that all the problems with the Zero 8 were a definite "Danger Will Robinson" but was still trying to give the Zero 4 the benefit of the doubt.

Anyone else?

As far as a 4 channel mxer goes, personally i like, and sound quality i have personally found to be much clearer. It when i've tried to conect it to the pc i having troubles. So if bascially your wanting to connect it pc, mmm atm maybe something else, but if your wanting it as a 4 channel, then yeah it's a very good mixer for a technically minded dj.

I concur with DJSnowie. I think it has excellent sound quality and with the tricks it can do, is an excellent choice in its price range. So maybe you have something else in your sound chain that's preventing your getting the quality you're looking for.

hmmmm...Strange as I just have my CDJs, korg, and monitors...Dont get me wrong, its clear but still lacks depth, any vinyl head will pull their scalp off...I am a CDJ man and going from a analogue mixer like a Ecler SMAC PRO to this is a big difference - thats all

Re sound quality..I noticed that when recording digitally using logic and traktor by assigning main output to zero4 input and using the application to record the mix...the audio lacked hi and low end.

Compared to an internal mix in either application the results were shocking and leave me very dissapointed.

Further investigation using pink noise and analysis tools shows that the output is more respectable than the input stages of the zero4.

To give you an an idea how bad this is, a fairly well researched compensation eq has to do this..
Low shelf 75Hz +1.5db 2Q
Para 265Hz -2.1db 0.98Q
Para 2350Hz -2.6bd 1.4Q
Para 9300Hz +1.5db 0.93Q
High Shelf 16000Hz +4db 2.0Q

And the result is still sound miles off...just compare a source track against one mixed through the mixer and recorded digitally.

There is no way the unit sits within the +1 -2db spec quoted

Aside from this problem the machine appears quiet and works very well in other respects.

Please Korg sort this issue out.

When I first purchased the Zero 8 mixer, my initial reaction was that the bass output was lacking. Music I had been used to hearing through my laptop and M-Audio soundcard just didn't have as much low-end presence.

After reading this, I feel like I was correct in my reaction. The mixer really does lack bass output.

Overall, I really like the Zero4, though you wouldn't be able to tell with this post. Maybe my views will change over time, as I've only had it for about 3 weeks. I can get past the congested interface, I love the channel effects buses, I dig how the faders feel and appreciate the overall flexibility of the assignments, yadda yadda. I even like the output levels, apparently I've got good enough sound to compensate for whatever my ears are missing. So far, I haven't experienced the hissing.

However ...

My gripes are as follows, in order of severity:

Turning on/off the firewire connection with my medium spec pc (2 ghz 2 gb ram 600gb of sata2 drives raid 0 running Windows XP) resulted in severe unresponsiveness in Windows for a good 10 minutes. I need to make sure to boot up the mixer before my pc, or plan for a good ten minutes of down time. Hella annoying.

I play weekly shows. Last week, the channel that i routed to my right turntable experienced a volume-meter failure. The damn thing got stuck at 5 (out of 10), 15 minutes into my 2.5 hour set, until I rebooted. It's a good thing I was by myself -- I handled it by keeping an eye on other visual monitors. But what level of leniency would you allow your expensive mixer before you didn't consider it professional grade at all? What if I had guests? Needless to say, I've deterred purchases with this simple thought.

The instrument input is way too low. I need to figure out some kind of pre-amp setup for my electric guitar.

Why are the channel kill switches on the same lever as the effects enable switch?!? If you push too hard when you disable the effects on a channel, beware -- you might accidentally kill the signal on that channel!!

BPM Counter absolutely blows. By keeping an otherwise-steady-tap, you'll notice the BPM read +/- 13 BPM. That seems like a big friggin margin of error. I haven't seen BPM reading this poor since the first generation numark and gemini beat counters. Lame.

Audible pop when switching EQ schemes. Just pick one and stick with it.

And to top it all off -- documentation is non-existent. So don't go around thinkin you might be able to learn something from the manual. That ain't gonna happen. Thank god for Al Gore. :P

So there are my thoughts. I don't know that I'd recommend Zero4 to anyone, but it's fun for the mean time. Korg better get on some *helpful* firmware updates, otherwise I just don't see this line lasting very long. We've got a reasonably small scene (some of us don't have a "scene" locally), and word travels wicked fast.

Yup. Now I consume my fish sticks.

I enjoy my Zero4 and use it mostly as a live mixer. For a MIDI capable DJ mixer I don't think there's a better option out (but the Ecler EVO4 is to be released soon). The latest firmware 1.6 has worked out a few bugs, but the BPM detection is more stable on older builds. I prefer a flat sound (it's a mixer right?) and feel that for a live performance the sound quality is better than acceptable. I've never experienced any catastrophic failures with firmwares 1.5 and 1.6. If you want a great MIDI capable DJ mixer that can double as a nice portable studio I recommend the Zero4.

Oh boy... where do I start? I bought the Zero4 about a year ago, when I thought it was the hottest mixer anywhere in its range. Times have changed and I've spent close to 100 hours trying to solve problems with it and probably only a whopping total of 2-3 hours actually using and enjoying it since the day I bought it. Should I repeat that?

I still love several things about it and haven't officially decided to sell it yet, but it's really wearing thin on my nerves. Every couple months I decide to knock the dust off of it, update the newest firmware, contact support, and search the forums. So far, I'm disappointed every time...

If you want details, you can search and find what you're looking for. If you want a summary and recommendation, steer clear.
