Y cable to mixer

Post by pierreb »

Hello,

I'm running out of inputs in my mixer. Is it safe to use a 1/4" Y 1 male to 2 female on the input side of the mixer? Allowing me to have both the MPC and Synth OUTS connected the SAME mixer in?

Or are the Y meant to be used differently.

No, it's not safe to hook two outputs directly together. You can short out one or both of them. You can use a Y adapter to split one output to two inputs (cutting the signal by at least half - 3dB), but not to share one input with two outputs. You also wouldn't be able to control the level of each input, which is one of the main functions of a pre-amp. Get a larger mixer or reduce the input sources. Your mixer may have other inputs that you might be able to use besides the main input channels. Look for tape-in, effects returns, or other inputs you might be overlooking.

use another in on your mixer as stated above - the only time I am using a y cable is with my mini D or Voyager but that is for internal routing for fx, and when I'm at home and want to do a quick demo of my full gear which I plug through a sub mixer into my stereo tub pre that does not have a headphone plug so I use the Y-cable in the outs (go to the main bd) just to hear everything.
