New Project to create a PC based Style and Sound Manager

Hi all,

Just a short update on the current progress in the project.

As suggested by PlainPete I am implementing the project in stages.

The first stage is a small utility to read style files and allow the user to view the names of the styles contained in the file. it will also create a text file in the folder allowing the style names to be copied and pasted into , for example, excel.

this stage is now complete and I will make it available soon, I want to tidy up the code and make it a bit faster.

The second stage is the exact same utility for PCG files, this is approx 99% complete just a small bug which I am still working on, at present it list all the Sounds except the first one! this will also be available soon after the first one is released.

Hi, Mick!

That sounds great!

What will the 3:rd stage implement??
Maybe an another similar utility to list and manage all those "performances" from bank 01 - 20..?? That would be nice too, thanks.

Hi all

at the moment I have to put the project on hold because I am waiting for Korg to release a .DLL library file which will allow for the decompressing of the style data so that the style elements can be read and manipulated apologies for anyone who is waiting for this project to be completed.

In the meantime I will work on something similar to RicFreaks XRM which has been discontinued since he no longer has a Korg keyboard.

Just to say that the development (by Korg) of this .DLL library is exactly the sort of thing than needs to be sponsored by a user requirements forum that I suggested in a separate post here:

I was hoping for a better level of response and enthusiasm for this than has been received so far. A 50-50 yes and no vote is just not good enough to contemplate doing this. The risk is that without user community involvement and sponsorship, then the things we need like these style management utilities and the Korg .DLL to read the style and sound files on a PC may never happen.

A friend of mine (who owns a Pa80) is currently developing a librarian and (partial) editor for Korg Pa-series resources. He expects to publish a 1st version "before next year" (?).

It would be great if your friend can contact mickb to discuss the project. It is not as easy as it seems. You cannot decompress the Korg sound and style files without knowing the encryption/compression algorithm which is proprietary to Korg. That is what mickb is waiting for (from Korg). Having waited this amount of time for a public domain librarian to be developed, it seems a great shame if your friend and mickb end up duplicating their work. Collaboration is the name of the game with public domain software!! Please ... ?

I wonder if your friend could contact me and then we could share information on the file formats, as Rob said, I have been waiting for Korg to publish a DLL which would allow for the decryption of the style data. I have the means of reading and writing korg format files but not the means of extracting the compressed data within the files for editing this data offline.

While I am waiting for KOrg to release this DLL I am working on an librarian for styles, and at the moment, performances. It will be released within the week for the PA1X/PA2X and then I will be making it compatible with the PA50/60/80.

Hi Mick,

My friend developed all those functions for his own needs (Pa80) 2 years ago (including data decompression, in order to get track names, volumes etc.). Now he is completely rewrittening his software in another language to extend its functionalities and improve its user interface.

do you think your friend would be interested in collaborating and developing a freeware utility to benefit all PA series users or maybe he is developing his software with the view of creating a shareware program, in which case I would understand why he may not want to share his code.

I intend to release anything I develop as freeware

Dear PAOLO TRAMANNONI,

sorry to bother you, but IMHO we all really need a little attention from Korg, trough your well known courtesy.

It is a fact that such a rich keyboard, with an unbelievable capacity of storing styles, performances, sounds, ecc. is much more enjoyable if a data management software is available.

This concept is obviously very clear to Korg (certainly more than it is for us): in the past (before OS 3.0 was released) at least 2 third party software where mentioned (without responsability) on the Korg PA site/links.

Thank to that information from Korg, I purchased Milan Markovic software, as I mentioned in previous posts.
Please, Paolo, refer to my previous post (within this subject) sent March 12, for more details.

As you can see from my previous post, Milan asked Korg to release the information he needed to update its software. But it never happened.

It does not seems that other software (mentioned by Korg) have been updated .....

So, for this matter of managing data we are in a situation WORST than 3 years ago!!!!

Finally,

A- if Korg would make a software, I think that everybody would be very happy.
B- If Korg would SELL us such a software (let's say about 100 Euros) I personally would be happy anyway, because of the High utility of a tool like that.

If Korg does not want to do A and B, then, WHY KORG DOES NOT MAKE AVAILABLE the algorythm TO GOODWILL peoples like Bob, Mike, Tascone and other?

I would immediately offer my euros contribute for the work to be done by these smart peoples.

Hi all

I would like to announce the release of the first utility for this project, It is a file viewer and will allow you to view the names of the contents of .STY files, .PRF files and .PCG files it is available from my website(link in my signature).

It requires Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 on your PC for it to work, this is available for download from Microsoft website ( there is a link to this on my site as well as in the "readme file" included in the utility's download
