Help: Korg Repair So.Cal - Oasys88 Smashed by Fedex

Post by neotrope »

Hi, folks-
well, here's the worst thing you can imagine ... shipping the Oasys 88 from Calif. to New York in a "roadie" ATA case, and Fedex "crunched it."

Seriously, diagonal tear in side of case, hit the left bottom corner of the keyboard hard enough to bow out the ATA case slightly AND bow the case of the Oasys below the optical drive... and smash the left couple of keys on the keyboard.

Fedex sent out inspector AFTER they shipped it all the way back from NY to Calif. in the damaged ATA case (?!) which was crazy, and then it took them 10 days to tell me I need to get a repair estimate before they "decide it they are liable for the claim." Ahem, after gross negligence in smashing an ATA case and the Oasys? Needless to say I just sent them off a professional, yet terse letter on my corporate letterhead (I have a business account with Fedex), and my acct. rep is the next one.

What is really disappointing is that I paid for $7500 in insurance with Fedex, and they're still going to decide if they're at fault?

SOOOOO...... help! I need to find a Korg authorized repair center in Southern California (Los Angeles county); preferably somebody with pick-up as I can't drive at the moment (had cataract surgery, congenital kicked in at age 46, last month). But, ideally somebody who can look at the pix, go "holycrap" and then provide a written estimate for repair for Fedex.

Primarily I need to get a quote to fully replace the actual metal case of the Oasys, and the entire keyboard action, as well as test/repair labor. It boots up, appears to work, but it's really crunched on left side. Lots of photos available.

Sad sad sad. If you are, know of, or can recommend somebody here in So. Cal, even the Korg folks locally, that would be great. First time anything has been crunched with Fedex, and of course it would be the Oasys 88 with all upgrades and options installed, and not the Triton 88s which have been shipped around before with no problems.

I'll post some pix once I downsize them to appropriate bandwidth for the forum (I'm a photoship wiz, too, did I mention?). ;-)

THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE.

Thanks Mike...
I was looking for that, but I guess I didn't look hard enough.

I already sent off a query to one of them, so will go from there.

If you remember Dr. Smith from Lost in Space .... "oh, the pain... the pain...."

Actually, that was my favorite show, as a kid. If life mirrored art, Will Robinson would just fix your OASYS. #-o Sorry about your trouble.

BTW, I was just noticing your sig...impressive! At least you'll have some nice distractions, while the O is in the shop.

Really sorry to hear about that! It makes me flinch to even think about something like that. :(

What I don't understand is what does the price of repair have to do with who is responsible of the damage?

Delivery companies are always trying to minimize their losses. You can interpret the claim adjuster's statement as follows:
-- if the repair is not very expensive, we will value you as a customer and accept the fault was ours
-- if the repair is expensive will use all of our power to avoid paying, starting by telling you it was packed incorrectly.

Sorry to hear about your big troubles!

Should you have to do battle with them, just one thing... There is no such thing as an ATA "rated" case. The ATA does indeed have a spec for a particular kind of case which a manufacturer can meet or exceed in the design of a case, but "ATA" itself is not a guarantee of any kind. It's simply a specification for the design of a case. Do a Google search for "ata case specification" and you'll see what I mean.

Even more importantly, it might be a good idea to become familiar with the spec. That way you can ask them how it's possible, for example, that their delivery service is able to damage a case with 3/8" (or whatever) construction...

Best of luck on your settlement.
