Experience of converting AKAI's keyboards samples?

Post by Dimedrol »

Hello, guys!

Anyone have an experience of AKAI's keyboards samples?
I mean, for example - you have an AKAI sample library with piano sounds. And you have converted these sounds into the KSF/PCG format for your Korg TR.
With all layers (stereo, or multi-layer scheme) and everything is going fine...
Is it fantastic?

I'm asking, because I never had a success in this task.
Either there was a poor sound of no sound at all.

Maybe anyone can share some experience ?

Hi Dimedrol

I own a Korg TR76 with EXB-SMPL and 64MB of Ram...
Last night I attempted to hook an old Yamaha CD reader/writer CD4260TX and tried to load an AKAI sample CD.

First of all .AKP files were recognized as .MID files
Then .WAV files weren't recognized at all, although they were .WAV files.
For a unknown reason flies were shown as "SOUND001.W" and the icon was generic instead of "WAV".
Inside the CD there was also a directory where files had shorter names, the .WAV extension was shown, but Korg TR didn't succeeded loading them.

If I attempt to load these files, Korg TR showed and error message such as "NO SUCH FILE OR DIRECTORY".

Thus, I hooked the same old Yamaha CD reader/writer CD4260TX to my AKAI Z8 and tried to load an AKAI sample CD.
It was perfectly recognized and I succeeded loading both .AKP files and relative samples.

In conclusion, this is a matter of misconfiguration or, in a word, it's Korg fault.

To load samples, I had a successful experience with SD card.
I created a directory called "SAMPLES" and put some .WAV files inside.
Thus I loaded them into RAM and created multisamples as usual.

Perhaps a workaround is to save samples into SD Card and rename them in a DOS fashion (8 characters+extension).

Regards
Michele

Yes I succeded creating a "single level" multisample, but I've understood how to create multi level multisamples too.
The relatively hard thing is to map the samples over the keyboard, then the conversion into .KSF and .KMP is quite easier and faster.

If you plan to use rhird party samples, be aware that they must have good loops because with EXB-SMPL editing samples is quite time consuming.
To create my multisample I used good already looped waveforms.

one question.. i am totaly new to samplers and a own the tr for litle time (very pleased since i change it for a psr-3000)
how can i load a wav file from the sd card? the keyboard does see the wav and then ask if i want to use as wildcard, after loading i have no idea where is that sample....
my primary idea is to have some wav fx files and put them on the lower keys of a combi ( by the way... is that possible? )

First of all you need to install into your TR at least 16MB of ram (or more if possible).
Then if you have no EXB-SMPL you need to convert .WAV files into files that TR can read, Usually A-Wave Studio converts .WAV files into .KSF ones.

If you have EXB-SMPL card installed instead, things are qute easier.
Please read Korg TR operating Guide - from page 91 and Korg TR Parameter Guide from page 100. There you'll find all the instructions needed.

I'm sorry but in this way I can be of no help. In fact I don't know how to create multisamples without EXB-SMPL, because I began creating them with it.
Then, make a little effort: RTFM :D
