Extreme vs. Studio, 76 vs. 88

Post by cindinj »

Ugh, I've been reading and reading and reading so now I'm just going to ask for advice. I was stuck on aquiring a Studio 88 but since that hasn't happened yet, I'm starting to think about a 76 instead. Will I really miss those 12 keys? I'm starting to think no so much, plus more transportable.

Other than a ton more voices on the Extreme, what are the big differences between Extreme and Studio? I just went through the voice list on the Extreme and there's some pretty cool stuff there that the Studio doesn't have. Does the Extreme have weighted keys?

Thanks,

Cindi

Hi
Its not really about 12 less keys, on all TRITON models the 76 key version is a semi weighted synth action keybed, while the 88 keys have a weighted hammer action keyboard as a real piano, the two are completely different, the 88 note is a larger & heavier keyboard.
Its really a matter of choice as to what keyboard action you prefer, but if you are a piano player & need weighted keys, the 88 note would be ideal.

The Triton Studio has 48MB of ROM sounds, CD burning, 7 slots to fit optional expansion boards.
The Triton Extreme has 160MB of ROM sounds, including the entire ROM of Studio, new sounds, the best from all the expansion boards, tube processing, Compact flash media slot, USB.

My wife has the Studio 88 and I have the Extreme 61.

I love 88 keys and I love the Studio. Recording at 96khz is another nice function of the Triton Studio (Etreme is at 48khz). After comparing a lot of the same sounds on both boards, I actually think the Studio has warmer and richer sounds than the Extreme. That said, most people won't really see a big difference in the sounds though.

It also really depends on a few factors here. If you have an external CD Burner and Computer then the Extreme has some definite advantages. With the USB you can move samples and entire backups a lot smoother. The Extreme comes with valve force which I use on a lot of drum patterns (mainly the kick) that really sets the sound up nicely for live shows.

The Studio doesn't have USB and you have to rely on the built in CDRW or floppy drive. You also have to get the EXB boards to increase the sounds. Don't let that decide that the Studio is an inferior board, however. Like I said before - the sound of the TS is beautiful. Plus you get two channels on the sequencer where you can record other instruments right to the sequencer. In the Extreme, this function isn't there but you can sample external instruments and assign those samples in your sequencer.

It's tough to decide, I know, but it really comes down to your play style and what you plan on doing with your board. I lean towards the Studio but, as I write this, I can't imagine not having the Extreme as well.

I do think since I'm a piano player the weighted keys are huge for me. I've played an Alesis some and the keys makes me a little nuts. I find myself sort of pounding on them when I don't feel like I'm getting good sounds control from my playing.

Ha - I still have the learn how to PLAY a CD on the board much less record. Everytime the band gives me a CD to play on the TS I can't get it to work. Duh, I know. I've even read the instructions in the book and just don't get it.

I'm pretty overwhelmed with the number of sounds on the TS so I'm probably best with that, although when I looked at the voice list for the Extreme I found myself wishing I had one in front of me to try a few of the new ones out!

Thanks, again.

:D

I really felt like the weighted keys were huge for me and I haven't been able to exploit the sounds yet on it. I'm sure if I *had* an Extreme I'd have a hard time giving up all those sounds.

May be a Moss Board in my future...

Thanks :)
