I am thinking of getting an X50 for use at home and in the school hall. Which speakers/amp do I need? Can I play it through my hifi?

Sure can, or you could play it through a pair of powered PC speakers. It outputs aroudn teh same level as a CD player or anything else like that, so you can plug it into an AUX socket or something.

I highly recommend the Logitech Z-2300 as an affordable 2.1 speaker system. It is THX certified and has very strong bass. It is much, much better than most speakers/stereos that cost a lot more. Look at the size of the heat sinks on the amp as good evidence that its power is not overrated. I've never heard of anyone returning them after giving them a try.
