Knowing your gear vs learning new gear

It's not the diving board that scares me, it's the splash when the thing lands on the deep end and I'm piled high with styrofoam and the jitters until I get the thing powered up and see that it is working.

No need to be nervous a the Karma - it is just plain fun. You can always not use it and use the M3 like a TS for the most part.

I had the same experience as sewa - doing the pc synth thing just doesn't cut it for me. Need a real instrument to create stuff. The PC does work well i audio processing however.

I am thinking the PC would be good for midi recording - a set and forget thing - but that does take one away from the keyboard and back to the PC - this doesn't help the creative process - at least for me. I think the approach the OASYS has is the best - built in PC - while still sitting at the SYNTH. No mouse though - touch screen instead - such a non-PC experience - which is key.

So you have to order an M3 - like can't you just drive down to the local Guitar Center and pick on up?

Well, it's here and powered up. It does really help that it's similar to the TS, I am already able to sequence something and save it to the little usb flash that came with it. Even dry the programs seem to have a better sheen to them or punch or 'newness' The Ts seemed very dry often when I brought in a program, but I think some of these may not need too much extra punch to sit well in my mixes. That way I can use the insert effects for special treatment and not simply punching up the sound so it doesn't sound lame. Now to upgrade everything and install my radias.

OK, just to prove I've figured out how to record a combi into a sequence, save it to usb and record it to a wav file, tranfer it to my pc, remaster it and upload it to the internet, without further ado here's (i think) Crazy Clav just a few measures from my new baby:

Cool, please post some karma tweaks too. I would particularly like to know whether its possible to tweak 1-2 measure midi sequence with karma sliders. It was not possible with v.1.

What do you mean by that sewa? You can always slide the slides in real time. If you mean by editing in the sequencer - than I wouldexpect so - I've never actually edited a karma sequence in the sequencer.

well, I'm wondering whether its possible to record a 4 bar arpeggio, loop it and tweak with the karma engine.

Ok, give me a bit of slack here. Actually, I have downloaded the 5 1/2 hours of tutorial for the m3 so maybe I can answer this question when I get there. Actually this karma 2 thing as regards sequencing is probably going to be my major learning curve. If the paramter and user guides weren't written in greek that would help, but the video should be easier.

sewa - no, the sequencer can NOT be used to trigger Karma.

George - for me the best way to learn Karma was to just play with it - one Prog. / Combi. at a time. the interesting thing was that for the Karma triton - there was some very good break downs for the combi's. Very tutorial like. I don't know if there is anything like that for the M3. I just play with it - never read the manual

Have you tried the X-Y mode yet?

the x/y is almost scarey, there's those combi's called x/y something or other, and one has simply these ethereal cosmic noises and i think drums kick in if you touch one spot and a synth thing if you touch toward the top, i don't know how they figured that all out, but it is fun to play with, how to integrate this into my own musical signature is going to be the biggest challenge at this point

and the only reason i'm concerned with karma is really because it's the only arpeggiator so it seems that i will need it for certain types of tracks, i'm not really into combi's, especially the ones that sound like a complete song already pre-made

Yes - the combi's can seem to be a tune ready to go. So I jam with them, then find out what I like and see what makes it tick. Sometimes I can't but hey - I am impatient - your mileage may vary. I think this is a good way to learn Karma - it has tons of "stuff" and you'll never figure anything out by reading the manual.

As for the arp. - well you can still use your TS and midi - although I still have problems with that.

Funny - I don't use the arp. much ....... We work very differently .....
