Korg Oasys discontinued as of July 2008 (?)

Post by Michael Robles »

How's about it, Korg any truth to this? Any more to be manufactured or is it available to stock on hand?

It'll be a sad day when it's discontinued, unless an Oasys II is also announced at the same time.

Yesterday my local guitar center was selling the Oasys 88 for $6500 - plus there was an additional 15% discount on all workstations bringing the price down to $5525! I sold my Oasys late last year, preparing for a move (which I haven't made yet) and I've been planning to buy another one in the future, so I was tempted. But I really want the 76 key model next.

If they are discontinued, hopefully I'll be able to find a used one in mint-condition in the coming years.

Well the OASYS is still in the active products at the korg.com and korg.co.jp.
This seems to be the favorite rumor lately, nothing more fun than to stir the community a bit?

We will find out if it is true or not by the end of August. This keyboard has been the best piece of equipment that I've ever bought. I'm still wondering when they are going to come out with those expansion efx.

I ran a search at the site that you linked in your post for the Oasys. All I found were a bunch of people bashing the Oasys. Also the person that wrote the post stating the July discontinue date, had Ketron in his name. Ketron is a competing synth manufacturer. How would anybody from Ketron know about Korg's plans?

Of course, welcome!

I assume you speak of OASYS II, Korg has not announced anything in that direction. Some of us do not believe that it will happen ever, and others hope it is just around the corner. The fact is that we will not know until (if ever) it is officially announced.

Why would any OASYS owner go to Synthzone for information on the OASYS when Korg Forums and Karma Lab Forums are THE places to be. Those posts are so full of crap. If/when Korg ever gives an "official" discontinuance notice, then maybe I'll believe it. In the meantime, take those misinformed posts with a grain of salt.

Well, the senior posters are mum.....and they would know......and as usual forbidden to speak of future products. With the abysmal sales of the big O, it should not be a surprise that they discontinue it. We may have on our hands the 21st century Fairlight. :(

We indeed may have the Fairlight of our time, but I'm not at all sure about your estimate on sales. I understand that the OASYS was not meant to sell as much as mainstream hardware, but we have not heard any real figures on the sales. The searial number database on KF does not count as only certain subset of hardware buyers use forums in the first place and of the ones that do many don't simply bother.

There have been previous discussions of sales, I believe. I can't state any numbers, but I can certainly tell you that they have not been abysmal.

Per the serial numbers at the Karma Lab forums, we know it's at least 3,200 units. Only the finance/sales/marketing types at Korg know whether this is a a good or bad number, based on whatever their initial projections were.

On the one hand this doesn't sound like a very high number; on the other hand, this was designed/priced as a high-end niche product, so I'm sure they didn't think they'd be selling 10,000 or 20,000 units. Also, some of the R&D investment served to benefit the M3, and some of the investment will, I'm sure, be carried over into future products for many years, whether it be an Oasys II or otherwise.

So, regardless of whether Oasys sales have been good or have fallen short of Korg's expectations, I think there's not much chance that the O ended up being a bad business decision for Korg.

On a different note, I continue to be amazed at all the O-bashing on the forums -- non-owners saying that it's a big, overpriced piece of garbage that's been a failure, & (some) owners complaining that it doesn't have a quad-core processor with 8gb of ram, & that Korg isn't releasing a new EXi or OS update every week. This is a phenomenal instrument that was very much worth the (admittedly large) sum I paid for it, and I hope Dan & others realize that their hard work in developing the O has been greatly appreciated by many.
