Bugreport: Annoying Radias drumkit soundglitch

Post by bsp »

G'day,

I am currently having trouble with some very annoying
Radias sound anomalies which result in random blips and bleeps.

I have created a bassdrum (triangle) and a hihat (noise)
sound and put them both in a drumkit (along with a
DrumPCM snaredrum to be exact but that could be left out).

As long as both sounds are played solo, everything works
OK but if they are played simultaneously, "blips and bleeps"
happen during the attack phase of the bassdrum sound.

Check out the following MP3s:

bd.mp3 (only bd+sd)

hh.mp3
(only the hihat)

now here's where weird things happen:
bd_hh_glitch.mp3

I just spent hours trying to workaround the problem -- if I put
the bd in group1 and hh in group2, the glitches disappear -- but
only until I add another sound on a regular timbre :/

Here's the drumkit patch so you can try it out yourself:
glitch.rdl

IMHO this is a major bug and should be fixed ASAP !!

The Radias sound engine is really cool for synthesized drums but
what good is it if things start to fall apart once you play more than
one drumsound.

Well, you can hear my frustration, I've been up all night trying to
figure it out but did not manage to..

Please help!!

Edit: It's also interesting that the sound glitches remain even if I mute the hihat track (i.e. no more note-ons), the only way to get rid of glitches is to send an all-notes-off, then at least the bassdrum track sounds correct again.
Here's how it sounds like:
bd_glitch_after_hh.mp3
d'oh!

Edit2: Here's a screenshot of the bassdrum in a sampleditor: bd_glitch_wrongdecayinupperwave.png, the upper wave is the one with the glitch, the lower one is the correct one.
The selected regions seem to be identical (apart from the volume because of normalization) but after that the pitch decay (EG3) seems to stop for a couple of hundred samples, resulting in the audible glitch.

I really really hope that this will be fixed in the next Firmware update!

The factory kits don't glitch like that.

Why not copy one of the factory drumkits into a new program, then replace the kick and hat with your sounds and see if there's still a problem.

meatballfulton: You are right, of course. The factory kits work fine (and so do a whole lot of other drum patches I programmed myself), it rather seems to be a problem with these specific patches. The bassdrum uses an extreme pitch modulation via EG3, by the way.

tonyman: No effects used.

Could someone please try to reproduce the issue using my glitch.rdl
patch ?
Just trigger the bassdrum and hihat alternately around 10 times and you should be able to hear the glitch "fading in".

p.s.: Sorry if my message sounded a bit harsh, the Radias is a great synth after all and in general works very well. I just would like to see things like this be phased out in future updates so the Radias gets even better.
