R3 - good for industrial music?

Post by IngerAlb »

Guys, I need some advice on the following matter: I'm thinking of buying a new Korg unit, that would be added to my current "tool set": Waldorf Blofeld, Alesis Micron and a Novation XioSynth. I can't decide between the MicroX and the R3. I will use the synth mainly for industrial & electro stuff.
On one hand, the MicroX seems to be loaded with samples (it's always good to have plenty to choose from), and I'm especially interested in the oriental patches (since I use such sounds in my music whenever I can grab my hand on such samples); on the other hand, the R3 seems to have some really nasty aggressive sounding leads.
The problem is that for the moment I can afford to buy just 1 of the 2, and on top of it, I'm unable to demo these units in a local store, so I'll have to buy them online without actually testing them in person. So sadly I have to rely on what I can find on the Internet (youtube demos and some mp3 patch samples). Considering all this, which unit do you think would complement better my current rig and would work better for the specified music genre: the MicroX, or the R3?
I know what are the main differences between these 2 units, I'm only asking which - in your opinion - of these 2 units carries the best suited type of sounds for industrial / EBM / electro music? Tnx!

You really should have a sampler that lets you use any industrial sound you find, not just a synth. Adding an R3 won't give you much that you don't already have. In fact, you have too many VA synths. You probably should have different KINDS of synths. I would recommend an ESX-1 for you to get a great step sequencer with nasty effects and sampling. You can find them on ebay for less than $300. The SP-404 is another option. The KP3 would be great for live FX and layered sampling. The Korg Z1 can be found pretty cheap and it has a lot of potential for industrial with its modulation matrix and physical modelling. The Triton Extreme with EXB-MOSS would be excellent if you find them at a good price, and it would be worth selling the Micron and XioSynth to get it. The Blofeld is worth keeping because its one of the best for industrial with its radical distortion curves and Waldorf sound (I wish I could find one at a good price). The Access Snow would also be a good addition, although the price is too high for what you get compared to the Triton EX with MOSS.

Tnx for the tips ;) Yeah, I got a little over board with the VA synths :) I used only wavs and various loops until now so I was quite fed up with digging into all sorts of software to get some usable samples. So I started to look for some hardware equipment at a decent price.
