Popularity of surround setups?

Post by sirCombatWombat »

An exellent day to you all!

I'm considering to upgrade my production setup to 5.1 channels as I believe there is a growing market for surround music where more and more people equip their home theaters for 5.1 or more channels.

I have, in addition to my standard stack of CD's, couple really good 5.1 records and I think their quality blows the competition out of the water. And even while my own livingroom surround setup is not quite up to par, I also listen to a lot of music in my current 2.1 studio, where I have very good monitoring setup. This leads me to believe that a good 5.1 mix is actually more forgiving to the sound system than a 2.0 track.

This leads straight to my question. How many of the people you know, your self included, have 5.1 channels or more in their home setup?

hm .. difficult question as I know myself and I do own a 5.1 setup, and I know of one or two others, depending of the definition "of people I know who have a 5.1 setup". Thus, what is now the right number of people I have to count?

I'm deaf in my left ear... So, I'm probably not one to ask. :) Got enough problems trying to work with stereo!

Perhaps more proper definition would be the number of households that you know having 5.1 sound setup against the number that don't. But not going to change a running poll.

Sorry Sharp, I thought it would be ok, and asked a permission from Daz. I will delete the posts my self if you wish.

Woops, I thought you just meant a link into the Oasys area :-)

{edit: I just re-read your comment in the Oasys and I had misread what you wrote - apologies}

I carried this part of your post to this thread as it was over there a bit "off topic" and as rules are obviously getting a little tougher here ..

I recorded for example "water meditation" into dp5.1 and used it to move the sounds within the surround field. Of course I am biased, therefore I hope that Charlie will comment on that.

I was thinking in similar lines, and perhaps breaking more complex sounds up to smaller pieces and panning them separately in DAW would give even more control. Of course if the panning would be built in the OASYS the control possibilities would be quite something.
Yeah, exactly. Breaking sounds into parts is something worth to be tried. Furthermore working with 5.1 delays is also something you should give a try. Of course pad sounds are the most easiest ones to move within the field and there is one sound of the neuron that is really amazing. Neuron was planned to be 5.1 compatible, so if I install my surround system I should check whether this is possible or not.....

Stereo is fine for me.
Between keyboard speakers, PC speakers, MP3 headphones and regular headphones.....
more speakers for me would be overkill, even though it's surround sound.

If you want it, get it.
It's really a personal choice.
There's no "right" or "wrong" way to listen to music. :)

I have experimented with delay based panning on 2.0 system and find that a fun playground, do the 5.1 delays bring more to it than the extra dimension? Also have you had any problems with 2.0 compatibility when mixing 5.1 tracks?

Well the number of voters is too small to get any real result, but interesting still. Thanks for participating. :)
