When using R3 as a controller...

Post by kibbels »

Hopefully I can explain this question well enough :)

I have an R3 and use Ableton Live 7. I have been using an edirol pcr-50 controller for all my midi input in Live, but want to set up the R3 to do this as well.

My first problem was when I would trigger a software instrument in live with the R3 I was also playing the R3 patch sound + the Live synth.

Is the correct way of doing this so the R3 doesn't play it's own internal sound to just set the Local to "off" on the r3, and when I want to go back to the r3 sounds set it back to "on" ?

Second question is a more general midi setup question.

Lets say I have 3 software instruments/synths setup in live. I set each one to take input on a different midi channel (i.e. 5, 6 and 7). If I set the R3 midi channel to 5 that will control/trigger the synth in ableton on 5 and if I switch to 6 on the r3, the synth on channel 6 ect.? Is that the "normal" way to use the R3 to switch between controlling multiple external/software devices or is there a better way?

Thanks!!

Yes to all of the above. You don't need to turn local control back on, you can arm the track the r3 is assigned to and play the synth that way, same as you would a vst. The keys will only trigger the synth then. :)
