Lee,

I heard the Grand piano Rx on the pa2x and pa800 are different. I agree with you that the grand piano on the pa2x is brilliant and i go so far as saying it is the best piano sample, only secod to the OASYS

I've played two CASIO keyboards, CTK-671 and Privia. The piano timbre and velocity response of Pa800 is close to that of CTK-671. I also played Yamaha PSRs and I do miss several nice Yamaha-ish sounds on Pa800. The rest of Pa800 features are simply great even with OS 1.60 not to mention the upcoming OS 2.0.

Well, this can possibly explain the different opinions in this forum about the quality of grand piano sound on Pa800/Pa2x.

Ive played the casio CTK-671 as well, you can't be serious about it. It's like comparing a Ferrari with a Kia. But if that is your opinion, i respect it, but you won't find anyone who will back you on that.

Hi mrkorg,

I was talking about the "Grand Piano W" sound on CTK-671. It is a mono one-layer low-pass filtered sample with "Reflection" FX applied, which adds a stereo feel to it. Before buying a Pa800 from an online store, I had some experience playing the piano on the following keyboards:
1) casio CTK & Privia
2) Roland EXR
3) Yamaha PSR (models E403, 1000, 1500), DGX 220, 520
4) Yamaha Clavinova
Of all those sounds the closest one seemed to be that of CTK-671. I only expressed my subjective feeling about it. The difference in sample rate, polyphony, and FX quality is obvious, however. And in this respect I agree with you that Pa800 by far outclasses CTK-671.

Yamaha always produce excellent piano samples, that is because they sample thier own Yamaha pianos. Korg samples from steinway pianos (i think) but the pa2x is sampled from the C-720.

Yes, I've just searched for the demos and the C-720 sound is very similar to Pa800 Grand piano!

The difference is that C-720 seems to have several layers with fortissimo which Pa800 lacks. And also the long natural sustain! But that takes up a lot of sample memory I guess. Maybe the whole size of Pa800 ROM

I own a PA2X after a PA1X.
Both had pianos that I did not like.
Piano sounds are much too mellow, sound with too much "cotton", I only use
the "Bright piano" to play blues or boogie, but some notes are much too metallic.
Also, what I do not understand is if I watch the tutorials DVD for the PA1X, Chris Whitehead Grand Piano is bright and clear and if I listen to mine, it is very different, like I said like "cottonned" sound. So I wonder why it is so much different...

Wonder if some of you go into sound mode and change some settings to make the piano sound more audible...

Its a modified version of the Grand Touch Pianos made for the Pa1x (about 15mb) plus some pianos using sound modifications to factory Rom pianos.
16 pianos in all. They should work fine with the Pa2x/800. Changes from the original include more expression with 6 levels of filtering, some amp envelope changes and a little EQ adusting on some. Its a sound set only - no global or other info to upset your keyboard.

I would just be happy with the Grand Piano Chris Whiterhead plays on the PA1X instructionnal DVD.

Why is it different on our PA1X or PA2X ??????

I don't know guys maybe it's just me but how many times can we re-invent the wheel? I see that manufacturers every year keep producing pianos with more bells and whistles but they are still pianos when it comes down to it, I guess it is a fetish that western musicians have to have the best piano sound?
When you are onstage and you put a piano patch, can the audience really tell the good piano sample from the bad? to tell you the truth the piano is the last sound that I really care about,I think a great accordion patch or really good strings section is more important to me than a piano but then again I fall into the category of a middle eastern player, not that I don't use piano sounds. So stop whining and complaining and if you don't like it change it, or buy another sampler with that ULTIMATE piano sample that is a GAZZILION gigabytes.

I call it NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO WITH OUR LIFES AND TIME. They tried
and wasted time and modified the same pianos and all kinds of things and at
the and they are all the same $hit...none is different, its ONLY a Piano.
And instead wasting time to tweak Pianos (since there is nothing to tweak)
other usefull things can be done...the Pianos on the PA for me are at least
3000 times more and better then i need.
