Editing on PC cabled to PA800
My PC, running Vista Home Premium, won't open a ".STY" file. Is there a program which will do that?

A .STY file is intended to be "played" by the arranger section of your Pa800. What do you expect from "opening" it on a PC (whether they are connected or not)?
1. To play it with the PC instead? - Not possible!
2. To edit its style elements (sequences)? - Not possible!
3. To edit (some of) its parameters (STS etc.)? - Not possible at the moment, but in a near future...

For now, you'll have to export the elements of the style one by one as midi file to edit them, and then of course import them back...etcJerryS wrote:My PC, running Vista Home Premium, won't open a ".STY" file. Is there a program which will do that?

when you're in record style mode, if you go to the menu, you'll see the Export...you can export all the elements of the style easily. Also, on the same menu you'll find the import midi window.musicaviat wrote:how would you export a STY file as a MIDI and how would you import it as a MIDI then again?
Also what software would you use to work with thise MIDI file on the computer?
I use pro tools, but just about any midi software nowadays has enough features to help you with this. Before buying it make sure that it lets you export the midi file as "type 0" because not all of them support this. Workstations have more advanced midi editing features, but arrangers aren't fully equipped. It's also the matter of preference. For me to edit a midi file on pc takes up no time, because i can switch to different controllers, and see a bigger pic of eveything, but that's not possible on PAs.

Hi Jerry,
There is one type of file from the Pa800/Pa2x that you can open on the PC if you download the program called SBEdit.exe from Korg's web site. This is the PC based songbook editor and it will edit .SBL and .SBD files that are contained within a "SONGBOOK" folder inside a .SET file.
Also you may like to experiment with some of Mick Barry's software which allows you some visibility of the content of .STY and .PCG files inside STYLE and SOUND folders within a .SET file.

If its a YAMAHA sty file you can just rename it to .MID and it works.

Editing on PC cabled to PA800
Thanks for all the replies. I think I didn't state my question properly.
I can go to a .SET folder and within that folder is a .STY folder. When on the PA800, I can open that .STY folder and see all of the different style names listed.
If I do this same process on my Vista PC, when I try to open the .STY folder, windows states "Windows cannot open this file" and asks what program I want to use to open it.
I would like to be able to empty and add styles to my Favorite banks on the PC using "Cut and Copy" commands.
I'm not interested in probing the elements of a particular style. (Just want to find what styles are contained in the .STY folder on the PC.)
I see Alain Frassee's post - Hi Alain - I really miss your wonderful I30 File Editor program. Might you be developing a comparable program for the PA800/PA2x series?

Yamaha has some softwares that help doing these kind of operations outside the keybaord little bit. I believe those softwares were programmed by yamaha users, and not the company itself. I'm not even sure if they're officially recognized by Yamaha.BasariStudios wrote:And the answer is still no, you cant do that, browse the forum a little

They have some stuff like that too for Korg but nothing usefull, like Kat or
some other, the only thing you can use is EMC2000 which is more of a converter
and it does very little of editing functions.

Hi Nedim,
Have you seen the PRM and XRM developments from Mick Barry (mickb)?
The software has not yet reached the stage of being able to edit the contents of .SET files, but Mick will get there. At the moment it's very useful to be able to automatically generate a spreadsheet showing the contents of a .SET file, every sound and style in each bank.
Best regards,
Rob

I just picked up on this now. Are there and legal concerns about developing this software that Mick is been working on at all? I hope Korg won't have a strange attitude about this.Martinkorg wrote:I'm not even sure if they're officially recognized by Yamaha.

I dont think Korg can do anything, he is not stealing anything from Korg.
Its like Korg stoping me to use Cubase for Sequencing.

yeah, but your analogy of cubase is not relevant. I've seen this kind of development go to all kinds of directions over the years. Cubase wasn't designed to do anything for korg. But this software is designed for a particular purpose i believe. Similar attempts have had different results. Some times, the company just doesn't care (or even is more than happy to see a smart user develop anything like that..) , some times they see it as a potential threat if it gets to a serious level, and they might think if this falls into the wrong hands it might get into a level when you can actually start converting and changing korg stuff...(i'm not saying this is the case, but just my experience of the past)...Some times, the company actually contacts the developer, and hires him/her...etc...and so on.BasariStudios wrote:I dont think Korg can do anything, he is not stealing anything from Korg.
