New speaker technology?

Post by Synthoid »

I was just wondering....with all the advances in technology over the last few years (CD's replacing vinyl, cell phones, HDTV), will we be seeing anything radically new with speakers soon? They really haven't changed that much over the years.

Yes, we've seen ribbon tweeters in studio monitors as well as various unique concepts from Bose, but what will the future hold? I'd personally like something that weighs less than 10 pounds with the driving power of a 15" speaker cabinet for live use!

Can't say I've seen anything that can be classed as a realistic option. Speaker technology has tried to change and there are some success stories like the Bose L1, but to me they are more of a “hope” for people than a true alternative to the 15” standard driver.

Quite a few of my friends have the L1's and they tried to convince me that they where the best speakers you could buy. So we decided to put them to a real test and I compaired their systems to my Celestion systems.

Not only did the Celestion system totally sound better, they could produce volume many times that of the L1 and retain clarity. (The guys did agree very easily)

Stick with standard designs I say. They are nowhere even close to beating them for volume and sound quality yet.

Regards.
Sharp.
