Mostly they are used for making mobile phone ringtones by non-musicians. I tried a few of the freeware/shareware ones out a couple of years ago and the results were truly dire! There is a software currently being released that will do just that. Having said this its in its infant stage on what it can do but what it does is it takes your audio and turns it into midi files for you and you can manipulate the notes even though its in Audio. This is one of the most awaited piece of code we have all been waiting for.
Here check it out for your self and be awwwed.
Keep in mind this can do only one track of audio at a time at the moment. In the coming years these guys will change that too.
