I need some advice

Post by KingBooger »

I have been shopping around for another keyboard (I have a Yamaha MO6) and I am having a hard time making up my mind. My nephew made me a cd of his music he had made on his computer and I was impressed. How does recording on a computer compare to real instruments and a multitrack recording studio. My MO6 was designed as a midi controller, so I wouldn't have to buy one. I am on the verge of spending the money I was saving for a keyboard, on a laptop and firewire interface. What are your thoughts?

I know this is not specifically M3 related, but the M3 is one of the keyboards I was contemplating. Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

How does recording on a computer compare to real instruments and a multitrack recording studio.
Most multitrack recording studios that I'm aware of, use the computer to record.
Many use Pro Tools, some Nuendo, some of the smaller studios, like mine, use Sonar, Cubase, Garage Band, Digital Performer, etc.

I started sequencing on my ESQ 1 many years ago, then used a Fostex VF-16, sixteen channel multitrack recorder for about 6 years, before making the switch to Cakewalk products, eventually Sonar 7 Producer which I'm currently enjoyng very much, and in my humble opinion, there really is NO comparison between sequencing on a workstation, and recording with a high quality software like Sonar Producer.
As for the various Softsynths, they're unbelievably good, but I mostly use the sounds from my keyboards, except for the drums.
I Have an M3, a TR, and a Karma, all of which have sequencers, that NEVER get used.
I hope this helps.
