Kontrol49 - encoder question

Post by metal »

Hi.

I recently bought a Kontrol49 - been wanting one since they came out. And so far I'm not disappointed. However there's one thing that has me puzzled, and I've been trying to search the manual and web for information on this issue. Without much luck.

Maybe I'm an ignorant, but I thought the reason Korg put ROTARY encoders on the Kontrol49 instead of normal encoders was that the encoders would work seamless. E.g. if I have a scene set up for ImpOSCar and tweak the encoder for filter cutoff setting it to a low value - then if I change preset and start tweaking the filter cutoff again it jumps to the setting from the previous preset. The encoders doesn't "pick up" the value like other midi-controllers are known to do... is this really correct, or did I just miss something?!

All I can say is that yes, the Kontrol49 can indeed work as you described, without jumping. However, your controlled software/device must be able to respond to incremental control changes; are you sure the IMPoscar can do that?

It's not just the ImpOSCar. It's the same with all my other synths, e.g. Massive, FM8... do I need to set something in the Kontrol49 configuration?

If you have it working, did you set anything special in the midi-options of your host by chance?

Hi,

I do not have an answer, but share in the concern.
I recently got a Kontrol 49 and use it with Ableton. Works quite well.

I also have a Doepfer Pocket Dial which does respond to knob values from the application. The Kontrol 49 does not.
Since the Doepfer works, I know the setup is correct.
But it appears there is no (documented) way of doing it with the K49. That would be dissappointing.

In addition, the Doepfer Pocket Dial can also send increase and decrease msgs. The K49 doesn't seem to have this option.
These come in very handy when using Bome's Midi Translator.

Other than that, I think I (will) like it quite a lot and I hope some experts can prove these findings wrong.
