How to select startup Performance when turning the Pa80 on
Hello everyone,
When I turn my Pa80 on, there is no style selected. So basically none of the keys work. Each time , I turn the keyboard on, I have to select a Syle, or a Performance. Then the keys will work fine. This problem started to happen when I added a HD.
I am wondering if anybody knows how to fix this issue.
The Best,
Hospa80

When you turn on keyboard, system automatic select PERFORMANCE 01. Select style and save it to performance 01
. Don't select style from FDD

I must be missing something. I tried your suggestion. I select a Style (Unpl.16Beat), I press Write button. I press Bas/Perc to select Perf. No:01-1. I press Enter twice. Write red LED turns on. The display says wait. However when I turn the keyboard off then on again, on display says, "No Style".
I also tried to turn the Global Protection, Hard Disk Protection and Factory Style Protection off, then I did the above. Still does not cooperate.
Thank you for your reply though.

Sometimes when you do any operations with SSD (you save styles, PCGs), they can incept erros in file's structure, and some features don't work. Try reinstall Resources.

Reloaded Resources
Thank you all for your feed back. I did try your suggestions which helped me out to correct the issue. Here is what I did:
1- Reinstalled OS which is version 3.06. That didn't resolve it.
2- Reinstalled Resource disks. That didn't do it, but it helped at the end. please bear with me.
3- I removed the hard drive.
4- Again, I installed Resource disks. That did it. Now when I turn the keyboard on, it automatically select Groove Style in Ballad.
5- Placed the hard drive back into my Pa80. Still everything is working fine. Even the Direct HD which wasn't working, it works now.
Note: I did not make any changes to my hard drive file structure during above steps.
I have a feeling that if I load a style or maybe a performance from my hard drive, it will get screwed up. I don't dare to try it.
Thank you again for all your support.

How I select styles from hard drive
I don't know if the following procedure is the right way or not, but it is what I did. I don't guarantee it, because I get problems that might be due to the way I have done it. So please do it on your own risk. The problem I get is after I load styles from the hard drive, upon rebooting korg pa80, there is no styles selected. keyboard in muted and you have to select a style to get the keyboard back in life.
I have to explain from begining:
1- I purchased some styles. They are in my computer hard drive.
2- I placed a small hard drive inside Korg PA80 and formatted it as instruction on page 27-2 of Korg PA80 user manual. I removed the small hard drive from Korg Pa80.
3- I connected Korg small hard drive to my computer via an external USB Drive Kit, and copied all the styles from my computer to the Korg small hard drive. (By small hard drive, I mean the type that is meant for laptops. In my case it is a Toshiba MK4032GAX 40GB device). My External USB Drive Kit is made by ADS Technologies; adstech.com, and I think it is called USBX-804 USB 2.0 Drive Kit. It allows me to connect Toshiba small hardrive which is an IDE device into my computers USB port. (You also need a cable adaptor to convert from small IDE hard drive pins to normal larger size IDE pins).
4- Unplugged the small hard drive from my computer and placed it in Korg Pa80.
I can load the styles from the hard drive, and it works just fine. However the problem is that after I reboot the keyboard, There is no styles selected. You have to select a style manually, then keyboard becomes usable again.
If anyone has any comment on these and what is the proper way of copying styles to small hard drive, I appreciate your feedback.

Re: How I select styles from hard drive
I don't understand. What is difference between "I can load the styles from the hard drive" and "You have to select a style manually"hospa80 wrote: I can load the styles from the hard drive, and it works just fine. When you load style, you have to save it to USER STYLE first while you can use it.
If you want to use style from HD (DIRECT HD) , you have to save these styles to special directory . !123.SET or !456.SET,!789.SET. These directories have special structure. When you make format HD into keyboard, these directories are created by system.
Structure HD for DIRECT HD
HD- root
!123.SET
--STYLE
-- - USER01.STY
-- - USER02.STY
--- - USER03.STY
!456.SET
--STYLE
-- - USER01.STY
-- - USER02.STY
-- - USER03.STY
!789.SET -> detto
Use only upper case!
You can select these styles direct from HD , Use Knobs for SELECT STYLE. LEDs near select bank style (on left ) light both.
I have original files for HD for PA60 (960kB).

No program, no Performance, No Style on Startup
What I mean by manually selecting is:
When I turn the Korg Pa80 on, in the middle row of the display (where it usually displays style name), says, "No Style". If I press any of the white or black keys, there is no sound.
One of the ways to get the keyboard keys (I mean white and black keys) to work is to select a style, then it would assign the appropriate program and performance and the keys will work.
I know how to fix it. All I have to do is to load 5 Resource disks, however as soon as I load; say jadid.set, things get bad again.

Load Performance factory defaults via hard drive
I think I found a way. It might not be the best way, but it does the job.
My problem was that after loading something.set, I loose all factory default Performances. I had to reinstall all the 5 floppies to get them back. Very inconvenience and time consuming approach. Also when I am turning my keyboard on, there is no style, no performance selected. I have to select a style from one of the style banks in order to be able to use the keyboard. (saving performance 1-1, does not work for me).
What I learned is simple. When the keyboard is in good working condition, back it up on hard drive. When problem arises restore from hard drive, like this:
(I should note that these steps erase your custom user styles and custom user Performance banks. So save your work before proceeding)
1- Install OS and Resource disks. (I am starting fresh from beginning).
2- PRESS DISK BUTTON, GO TO PAGE 8 (Util 1). SELECT BACKUP, AND SELECT HD. (This step seems very straightforward and basic, however it is the magic solution I was looking for).
3- Now, if I load something.set and loose the default factory Performances, all I have to do is press Disk button, go to page 8 (util 1), and select Restore from HD. This takes no more than 10 seconds. All Performance default settings are restored now.
I have also posted the above to the other post with subject of "Loading something.set and loosing Program Performance".
