deleting ESX-1 files/songs
hello all ESX-1 users,
I've bought ESX-1 and I think that machine is really great.
However, I'd like to load my own samples via Smart Media into internal memory , but it says : Mem Full - delete unneeded files to increase the amount of free space.
Unfortunately, I don't know how to do that. Could you please explain it to me please? I've been trying to use CLEAR SONG function or CLEAR PATTERN , but it doesn't increase my internal memory and Songs and Patterns are still there.
Thank you for your help.
Konrad

first things first, make sure memory protect is turned off: using the buttons beneath the LCD, go into Global mode and change Protect from On to Off. press Write twice to store the change.
now go into Sample mode and scroll thru the various samples, until you find which ones you want to get rid of. when you're sure you're ready to delete that sample, press Shift + key 14 ("Delete Sample"). the screen will display "DelSmple Sure?" -- press 14 again and then wait until the display returns to the samples select screen. do this as many times as you like until you've gotten rid of samples you don't want and/or have made enough room to add the ones you do.
to see how much memory you have available, go to Global mode, and then Memory -- the amount of room left for samples will be displayed here; if i recall, it is displayed in seconds.
all of this is in your manual. if you don't own one, it can be found online at http://www.korg.co.uk/downloads/ESX1/su ... Manual.pdf
i encourage you to read it thoroughly, as it will answer almost all technical questions you may have in the future.

hello,
Thanks for your advice. However, there is something I don't understand... I thought I could delete whole songs or patterns at once even those I created already.
So, I have created one pattern contains only beat (BD1) modulated by EFFECT knob. So, if I delete this BD1 sample permanently it means I delete pattern also, but I might need that BD1 beat sample in future and will not use it because it won't be there. Am I right?
Sorry for messing...

songs and patterns are stored independently from one another: if you delete the samples ("sounds"), the pattern information will still be there, and vice versa.
an example: let's say you place a kick drum (BD) on steps 1, 5, 9, and 13. if you delete that bass drum sample, the sound is gone forever, but there is still an event stored on steps 1, 5, 9 and 13 -- that way, all your knob tweaks and effects are safe when you just want to change the samples themselves. similarly, if you delete a pattern, say, A01, all of the note information, event placement, knob tweaks and effect modulation information will be erased, but the sounds you used in that pattern will remain.
and yes, once you delete a sample, it's gone forever, unless you've saved it to a smart media card first, and/or backed it up on your computer.
did you purchase your ESX-1 used? if so, the previous owner might have filled the ESX's memory with really long samples that take up or "waste" a bunch of space. find the ones you don't like and either delete them, or save them to your Smart Media card first, and then delete them (from your ESX). now you'll have more room for your own sounds.

you can delete songs, but doing so won't make room for samples. the ESX can be completely filled with patterns and songs, but that doesn't take up any of the memory used for samples. the opposite is also true: you can have all of your ESX's sample memory full, and yet, you could have every pattern and song empty. they're two separate things.wojtek_konrad wrote:and how delete for example DEMO SONGS? For example Demo 4-5 C.23 ???
All these demos take lots of memory and I would rather delete them than samples I might use in a future.
Hope there is a chance to sort it out somehow!

to delete songs and patterns, just do what you've been doing: select the pattern or song in question, and press Shift + 9, or Shift + 10. now those patterns or songs will be empty, and you can record your own in their place - BUT - remember to turn off memory protect, like i mentioned in my first response, or they'll keep coming back.

Surely it is confusing at the beginning
I've bought brand new ESX but probably I've put to many samples via Smart Media and thought that deleting songs or patterns I "create" more memory, but as you explained me it doesn't work like this
However, I will follow your advice and see how it works!
Thanks

internal memory?
are the pre loaded songs and patterns entirely composed of the pre loaded samples? if that's true, then if all the samples are erased will the patterns and songs be cleared too?
if I clear the preloaded samples (sounds) will that make more room for original stuff?
here's an other similar question. I have the esx running without external memory in it. I would like to get rid of every sound that's pre loaded (or the best I can do). for what I undertand from this thread the songs take up different space then samples, so I get how some "clearing" out may not be possible or really necessary.

Think of your samples as a pool you draw from, 275 seconds total. Yes, ALL the preset patterns draw from this pool! So do all of your custom patterns, therefore deleting any samples will mess up any patterns that make use of that sample slot. You still need to go through and delete the actual patterns though: they'll still trigger all their steps, even if some are mute due to lack of samples. Instead of going through on the ESX and tediously deleting everything...
I'd recommend downloading "OpenElectribeEditor", making sure you have a SmartMedia card and USB reader (or SD if that's what you've got), and upload the original system file before making a blank file and tweaking it to your taste. My recommendation would be to set aside blocks of space - say 25 slots each for kick, snare, open hi-hat, closed hi-hat, other cymbals, misc. precussion, bass waveforms, lead waveforms, vocal samples, etc. - so you have nicely grouped samples and know where everything is for easy navigation on the ESX. Leave some spaces for future additions! It'll be worth the initial fuss because you could be using this template for years and all of your beats!
