Bruce, in your situation of a home setup you will want powered monitor speakers made for keyboards. I just got my M3 a couple of months ago. I then went to Guitar Center and listened to several brands of powered speakers. The quite knowledgeable keyboard guy at the store recommended a pair of Yamaha HS 80M powered monitor speakers. He said (and I agreed after listening) that these speakers had a cleaner sound, i.e. higher fidelity to the input, than the Mackies and a few others I auditioned. The HS 80M's have an output power of 120 watts. I generally don't turn the M3 slider volume up past the halfway mark for fear of disturbing the neighbors. Unless I want to scare off a door-to-door salesman with some dungeon chimes, or something.

The HS 80M's were $269 each, but you may be able to get a better price with a little shopping. I'm totally satisfied with these speakers.

Opinions wanted about the KRK RP (2nd generation) series

Post by M3forever »

Greetings!

Well I do appreciate the reccomendation about the HS-80M however at this time, seeing that I'm not working with no job in sight, laying out over $500 for a pair of speakers right now is a tad on the high side. I still need something regardless which may not be ideal as headphones only go so far.

KRK systems has new RP-6 Rokit 2nd generation (all yellow.. limited edition) powered speakers which can be had for $149 each (supposively on "sale") maybe less. The nearest Guitar Center actually doesn't have that much in stock to audition from in person in the active monitor category unfortunately so my opportunity for direct comparison is very limited.

Any of you gents seen, currently own or heard the KRK line especially the new G2 line perhaps?

Thanks for continuing the dialogue.
All the Best,
Bruce

Haven't tried any new KRK models but the rest seem nice.

I personally went out on a limb and got a pair of the Behringer 2030A's and I know they may not compare to high end brands other members have here but to my ear they sound great, especially considering they cost $260.00 a pair.

The KRK RP-6 G2's are history and the quest is over !!

Gents,

I ended up with Yamaha HS-50M's which are small, compact and reasonably powerfull with good to excellent high and mid range. The backside of the cabinet has a range of controls which helps too. The only downside is that the woofers are only 5 inch however the next size up the 8's were $112 more each. My wife is also happy with them as they pack a punch and economize on space.

The KRK'S were dismal comparatively speaking as they sounded harsh, thin and accentuated/placed a heavy over-emphasis on the bass end of the spectrum. They are not suitable for classical piano, orchestra or soundtracks. Sounded like the whole or most of the high and mid frequencies were ripped out. I guess to each his own.

Now to finalize on a stand and get back to playing.

Thanks so much for asisting me in this search.

Kind Regards,
Bruce

I agree with Xenomorph on the Behringer 2030A's - I've had a pair for several years now, and they sound very good (loud and neutral-sounding) and didn't cost as much as other monitors...

After you rebrought up the Beringher possibility I looked online and they do look very interesting as they are more powerful and the specs were good. Unfortunately when I went to GC to finalize on the HS 50M's it never occured to me at the time to demo these out too.

I'm glad you 2 gents are happy with your monitors.

You got a fair deal to pick these up at $260 a pair as GC had them for $299.

Bruce....I don't buy anything in a retail store unless I need a keyboard cable or something for a quick fix, I buy it all from AmericanMusicalSupply.com or Sweetwater.com and have been since the late 80's when they were mail order only.

Out of the 2, AmericanMusical gets 80% of my business....Free shipping on most items(even speakers that weigh 100 lbs), excellent payment plans, No sales tax(unless you live in NJ I believe), their customer service is 2nd to none, 45 day return policy, and most items like the Korg synths get an additional year of warranty added at no cost(plus the default year and the extra year if you register it online). I could go on and on but I think you get the idea.

I do compare items I'm interested in at a local store if possible, but a lot of my purchases are based on past experience with a brand or customer reviews(which are very helpful most of the time).

*NO I do not work for AMS  Just want to remind people that internet retailers can save them some $$ and when their local retail store doesn't have an item in stock, chances are the websites will 8)

Actually you brought up a very interesting point which I agree with.

For example: Online GC's price for the Yamaha's was $199.95 each which was the case for many other online retailers including AMS and Sweetwater. I hate the MAP (minimum advertised price) rules that manufactors impose on retailers.

Then I visited one of their brick and mortar locations & lo and behold
i discovered to my surprise that the in-store price for the same item was $157 something each!!

Go figure. So we are in full agreement that it pays to do your homework and be diligent. My continuing strategy is to get the best price online, try to have Guitar Center match it and then pick it up locally so there is no waiting time or chance that something may be damaged in while in transit.

Thanks for pointing out the advantage of buying at AMS.

I would probably get the Behringers if I wasn't more or less "all set" now.

The in-store price was 40.00 less?

I am truly shocked and have never seen that. With my luck, such an opportunity wouldn't present itself anyways but like you said, never hurts to do some homework!

Now that you brought AMS up, AMS actually had the better deal (a slight edge over GC) as they were including a stand which was probably in the neighborhood of $45 (if bought seperately) and some auralex padding/foam plus a DVD.

So one can offset the $42 price difference against the "free" speaker stand
@ AMS.

One never knows what goes on at GC since their sales can be different online versus an actual store as well as the timing thereof.

I'm using a pair of 30 watt Roland Cube Monitors (CM-30). They sound great in the studio and double as live monitors on gigs or even as a small PA for coffee house-sized performances (they have 5 inputs each).
